Went to this show today. Good collection of dealers, mostly US but a couple World and a couple Ancient. A few well-known dealers and some nice product. I bought an 1837 R-6 half dime. Still seems to be dealers are hunting for product but there is no shortage of Morgan dollars. One dealer told me he is still paying retail in wholesale transactions and we had a chat about the price of common-date Liberty and Saint double-eagles. There was lots of dealer-to-dealer action. One dealer told me yesterday was quite busy. When I showed up at opening time of 10 am today, it was pretty dead but it got busier. I left at noon. Stopped at ICG table to say Hi! to @Insider, fist-bump and trade compliments. Every time I looked over at his table, he seemed occupied.
Yeahhh, says it was an about 4 hour drive one way for me to go... Just can't do it, I'd rather be at work where I am now than to make an 8 hour round trip. I'd like to catch one of them but man, I'd prefer Ft. Lauderdale or Miami. LOL
Apparently the show was good for the dealers and collectors. Unfortunately there are some dealers who don't seem to get much traffic and others who seem to be busy most of the time. I get the impression that for most dealers the show was good and their comming back. One dealer was completely cleand out of slabs from all four makor services by a new coin dealer locating to Boca. The show is busy for the first few hours and then public dies down for the last hours. ICG was the only TPGS at the show. One note: I had two different SUCESSFUL deales come up to the table with YN basic coin collecting questions. I have no time for dealers as this and I like to try to teach them what they are seing in a way that makes them wish to learn more in the future. It is much more harsh than I would for a student because they should be embarassed not to know that a die clash is not a scratch into the coin or that a rounded, smooth, shiny, surface usually indicates a polishe coin. Know your dealer because some of them are not very knowledgeable.
Lots of collectors came today but some dealers left before 1 PM. I give the show a 7.5 -8 out of 10 (FUN is a 10). There was lots of variety and interesting coins. I was stuck at the table and still managed to spend over $250 on stuff. One that got away that I really wanted. A guy had two 1909-SVDV cents that he found in a roll. One side was a fairly deceptive struck C/F and the reverse was the crudest "play-money" looking VDB I ever saw. He let me take it out of the 2X2 and the edge was filed where the sides were joined. A friend from NGC was at the table and he took a look and laughed the reverse was so bad. I showed the guy how wide and fat the letters in Pluribus were compared to the obverse. Rats, I forgot I own a phone that takes pictures ! Anyway, he wanted to keep both fakes.
I went to the show on Friday. I had a lot fun and found coins for a couple more Roman emperors, Quintillus and Theodosus I. The dealers told me that Thursday was a very busy day. The crowd on Friday was pretty good, but “wall to wall.”
