    Hi to all,

I saw a coin from Mexico 1753 8 reales in ebay, see the link.

The weight of the coin is 26.52 grams and it is not fake (I think).

Ihere is the link in ebay:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=380195927704&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

I surch about the weight if it is must to be around 26 grams.

I saw in a site that:

"The Spanish 8 reales was the world money standard from the time the Mexico Mint started striking coins in the late 1530's until the 1850's. The New World 8 reales and the subsidiary 4 reales, 2 reales, 1 reales and 1/2 real started out as crude "cob" coins (See: Spanish Treasure Coins) with irregular shapes, often with parts of the design missing. This made it difficult to ascertain that the coin weighed the proper amount (27.03 grams).
    "

    This is from this site:

    http://www.coinsite.com/content/faq/8RealesMilledPillar.asp

    I see that:

"This made it difficult to ascertain that the coin weighed the proper amount (27.03 grams).
    "

Now if a coin like this have only 22 grams for example, this coin is must to be fake?

Thank you very much for advanced.

That coin is a fake Avi, and not a very good one. This is what a genuine coin of the period looks like -

Not only is the weight below the minimum 26.8646gm but the design is wrong too. And it has casting bubbles.

My first thought was that it looks funky. The pocks on the obverse are not a good sign.

Is their a possibility that this piece was sea salvaged and processed Doug? I know it's a stretch...

Would agree with Doug on that one. The coin does not look good, and the weight is too low. This particular seller has not impressed me with their previous offerings of Spanish colonial coins.

I think I see a casting seam which means it would definitely be a counterfeit.

Yes, it looks fake. The bubbles, the seam, and overall weak design point to a fake.

I considered that. But given the design differences and weight - it's a fake.

    Contemporary Counterfeit?

The coin could be a contemporary counterfeit. You have to remember that these were widely used as currency, so counterfeiting was a very common occurrence. The contemporary counterfeits were meant to deceive merchants, while modern counterfeits are meant to deceive collectors.

Many collect the counterfeits due to their availability and variety.
