Guys i picked up a bunch of run of the mill morgans picked one out of the pile that i noticed looked weird as it seems to have a crack running along the rim from the end of the date up into the word unum. Can anyone tell me how this may occur and is there any specific designation for this? I will post a couple pictures and if need be can take better ones. Thanks guys
Die cracks aren't uncommon, I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than myself will contribute here...posting full size helps
First, welcome to the neighborhood! Die cracks around the perimeter on the obverse (or reverse) of Morgan dollars are pretty common since it takes about 130 tons of pressure to strike the planchet.
Cracks that are thick are referred to as breaks, and they would be listed in VAM. Also, "radial" cracks that go straight in from the rim are usually listed. Your coin is in the VAM catalog for other reasons (mint mark position or possible repunching, likely repunching on the date), but not because of the cracks.
There are a number of VAM's listed for your coin. Check out VAMworld. Yours appears to have a left tilted mint mark. Several to choose from. Possible VAM-50 Good luck.
Guys how about this 1880 o that was in a roll of 1880 o morgans. Looks kinda like a vam16 set right o? Has die cracks from eagles right wingtip halfway into the word america. Possible checkmark in 8?
