You are correct on both counts. This was when Nixon was Ike’s VP. He (Nixon) came to Lake Logan, Champion’s North Carolina retreat, which was named after my grandfather. (Billy Graham was a local.)

My mother, a young teen at the time, tells the story of how she took Richard Nixon trout fishing, and how funny it was to see the Secret Service detail having to wade across a stream behind them with their pants legs rolled up.

Nixon was reportedly squeamish about putting a worm on the hook. Even moreso when her little brother, my Uncle Logie (Logan Robertson Jr.) pulled a live frog from his pocket to present to the Vice President.

Mom caught a big string of trout. Nixon? Zip. Zilch. Nada. To Mom’s annoyance, the press then photographed Nixon triumphantly holding up her catch!

He later taught her to use chopsticks, so he must have been proficient in that skill well before his historic visit to China.

Good on you, past round winners, for staying in the game after you’d already won, and going to bat for somebody else.

i want those, that series is one of my favorite of modern us coins, i have many versions in ms-68 (silver) and cannot seem to get enough of them, i was 11 years old when the bicentennial hit, my mother was in the 4-h club and i was a member..was mostly just girls and another dude (good odds) , i actually met my second girlfriend (jennifer) gods know only where she is now, lol..anyways, at out annual fair days in my town, me mum set up a history booth showing all the things pertaining to the history of colonial times leading up to independence in ct, back in the olden days, all of us in the 4-h club contributed different articles and items to showcase on the billboards and tables of the booth, and we all took turns handing out literature and copies of old historical currency to participants at the fair, was very cool

I too turned 11 in 1976, and that is the year I began collecting. I remember the first time I got a Bicentennial quarter in change. I was at a school friend’s birthday party at the (roller) skating rink. The Disco era was on the rise, and Roller Boogie was popular with all the kids. (Not me- I couldn’t skate worth a darn. But I liked the music.)

Anyway, at the concession stand, I bought some snacks with the money Mom had given me, and there was an unusual looking quarter in my change.

It had a drummer on the reverse instead of an eagle. Bear in mind that up to that point, there was no real variety in the designs of the circulating coins, or there hadn’t been for the entirety of my life, at any rate, aside from a few Wheatback cents.

I paid attention. Slightly later, on that Thanksgiving, 45 years ago, I found a 1936 dime in my grandmother’s silverware drawer, and became a collector.
