I think they started to again, but there was a long period where they had to cut off basically all submissions aside from walkthroughs to catch up. Some of the levels were almost a year
Assuming you're referring to those new to the hobby, there's no way to answer that really. But I strongly suspect those new to the hobby will follow the same story that pretty much all coin collectors do and always have. They come and they go, and then years later they often return. And I'm kind of qualifying it by limiting to those new to the hobby because online buying has been around for almost 25 years now, it's not something new, and it's very well established and quite prominent. My point of course being that most established collectors, or call it collectors who have been collectors for some time, well, they've always known about online buying. So it's nothing new to them. Now did people staying home result in attracting new collectors ? I'm sure it did, for some. But with coin collectors it's pretty much always been the same - you've either got the bug or you don't. Those who've got it stick with it. Those who don't - don't. And it really doesn't matter what the buying venue is. If they want to be involved in the hobby they will find a venue that appeals to them because they will seek it out. Whether it's collecting from pocket change or going to shows and live auctions, or buying online - they'll go with and stick with what they feel comfortable with.
I wouldnt go that far. While many have, there was still a significant percentage that would only buy at shows or an LCS that changed their ways in the 18 months
GD, do you have anything to share about hits, pageviews, or new registrations at CT the last 18 months during Covid ? We had to see some changes from the historical patterns, no ?
Granted, but they had to because there were no shows and shops were closed, or many were. And for those folks, they will will decide to go back to their old ways, or not. And I suspect it'll go both ways. But most of those who did buy that way did so because they wanted to see the coins in hand so I suspect a larger percentage will go back to their old ways.
I doubt it will be an overwhelming percentage or even a majority that goes back to purely just that. There's nothing wrong with doing it both ways which I suspect will be the majority now that theyve done both
True for all clubs, hobbies, etc. But Covid was unique because of the stay-at-home tendencies and the ability to explore and "go out" via one's PC. If Covid hit 30 years ago, it's entirely different. But it's new to those who need time to FIND the sites and get COMFORTABLE with them. I was online in 1998 and buying from Amazon and Ebay by 2000. I didn't buy coins from Ebay until about 2012 and HA & GC until 2019. The % of people who join CT and buy online might be the same or higher....but the POOL of people who know about them I believe has expanded in the last 18 months. We'll see how "sticky" they are once things go back to normal. Of course, what REALLY will get the masses interested in coins is gold approaching $3,000 an ounce.
I don't dispute that in any way. But out of all the people who did that, and yeah there were a lot who did - how many picked coins and their interest ? I suspect the percentage would be roughly equivalent to the percentage of the population that are interested in coins to begin with - and that's not a very big number. So my only point has been that I don't see the pandemic as being the primary reason for the market to turn around. I simply think it was finally time for the market to turn around - and so it did - just like it always has. When there was no pandemic. Did the pandemic play a part ? Yes ! But I see it as being a minor part.
Percentage wise of the population no, in terms of numbers yes. 1 percent of the US population is 4 million, 1 percent world wide is tens of millions. Thats a lot of new people
We know there was an explosion in baseball cards, collectibles, and NFTs. While coins and PMs did not get any headline-moving advances (though gold did top $2,000 for a few weeks)....there was probably a spillover from the others. In 2022 and 2023, we'll know from Big Regional and National Coin Shows....bidding activity on HA, GC, and Ebay....if 2020-21 had staying power and expanded our numbers.
