    Hi Everyone,

I hope your week is going well!

I was scrolling through Facebook and came across this:

    951BD9CD-3DF1-4747-AEFD-E529ADD571B7.jpeg

    I’m incredibly excited.

So, it’s not a coin show in the traditional sense, but, I can finally meet people in my area who collect coins other than my dad and brother.

I’m trying to decide what coins to bring. Definitely Roman and Judean. I’m probably going to bring my Agathokles bronze, I’m sure it’ll be a show stopper. Lol

I’m assuming that most people who will come will collect Canadian/US and/or world coins. Although, it would be fantastic to meet another ancient collector.

I’m a naturally shy and nervous person, so, I’m nervous about it too. I hope nobody comes along and demands that I give the coins to the museum and goes down that rabbit hole because I would freeze and cry, probably.

But, I’m going to get the word out about the awesomeness of ancients. Fingers crossed that we can get a concert from the event. Lol

Why don't you want anyone to know where the show is?

It sounds like a lot of fun! Enjoy yourself. I don't think anyone is going to ask you to give up your coins, but I'm sure lots of people will appreciate your bringing whichever ones you decide to bring.

Does it really matter? We already know that it's in Canada.

Have fun at the show, and tell us all about it here afterwards!

PSA: Don't leave any coins in your car, or out of your sight for any period of time. Fuel up before you go to the show and wait to get home to eat; most people who get robbed get their coins stolen while in a store paying for food or gas.

have fun! When I go to a coin show with no ancient dealers, I walk around and ask if anyone has ancient coins they want to sell. Often there a few items in someone's junk box that are not too expensive. I found these in a show in June and promptly gave them to a boy next door and a friend. The two were less than $40. The dealer sold other stuff and a few ancients.

Do you actually fear it could happen?!!
You could have problems of that sort only if you were found in an airport carrying ancient coins out of a country in which these coins circulated in ancient times, Greece, Turkey, Tunisia for example: some countries require export permits for antiquities. Or, of course, if somebody at the show recognized rare coins that were stolen from her/him years ago, a robbery for which a formal complaint had been filed with photos and full descriptions... But it is not very likely to happen.
Well... not absolutely impossible ;). I remember a very unlucky criminal was caught because at a gas station somebody noticed that two cars refuelling in the same time had the same license plates and called the police: there had to be a fake one!
OK I'm kidding - Enjoy yourself ! I hope you'll meet other collectors of ancient coins.

    Thanks everyone!

About the picture, I guess my Dad’s internet paranoia kind of wears off on me at times. Donna is right - I live in a small town outside of Ottawa and I figured, too, that nobody here lives the county I live in, so, I guess either way, it doesn’t really matter.

As for people possibly lecturing me about ancients, it probably won’t happen. I’ve made a lot of assumptions about this event that are based on my understanding of my town and I apologize.

I asked my brother if I could borrow his Athenian tetradrachm and Julius Caesar elephant denarius, but, he said no. :(. He works that day, so, he won’t be able to go.

My hope is that people will be intrigued by ancient coins and want to start looking into them. By ‘concert’ I actually meant ‘convert.’ But, if they have a mini concert while we’re there, I won’t be complaining.

Not sure about Ontario. But if I attended a coin show with that description in the US, I'd expect to be the most knowledgeable person in the room on the subject of ancient coins. Which is saying a lot, because my knowledge on the subject is pretty limited!

Good luck and have a good time anyway. And, if anyone manages to make you cry, then we'd love to hear that story! :writer:

Someone will tell you that all yours are fakes and real ones are all in museums. 'Experts' are easy to find. A show with 'NO BUYING OR SELLING' will attract fewer people, I would expect, unless the part you blacked out changed that. I would take a very few coins that were as different as possible in type and value.

So true Doug, so true. I took two Peace dollars to one of the high-end shops in the Houston area. I will post them here. The 27P they told me was cleaned and worth very little. The 28P they said had been cleaned and was worth very little. I sent them to a TPG and the 27 was MS 61 with the 28 being MS 63. It was an experiment as I was looking for an LCS that I could build a relationship with. I have never visited an LCS and was just looking around. 27 P Peace MS-61.jpg 28 P Peace MS-63.jpg

If that is your hope, I suggest you bring a couple of lower grade coins, too. When people realize that they can buy a 1600-year-old coin for less than the cost of a 160-year-old penny, they often become more interested.
