I'm sorry but I thought a "Top 10" would be your "Top 10" coins that you've purchased over the last 12 months!...Irrelevant of type or series?..Seeing a lot of extra "Top 10's"?...I've not got a problem with this as the coins posted are really interesting but what's the criteria if any?....I've been cutting out coins from my purchases this year to try and give as varied group as possible...What's the protocol? Thanks.....Paul
As one that is guilty of this, for the last two years doing a top ten of my Macedonian shield coins and then a top ten of all the boring stuff... everything else, when folks specialize in an area and have a lot invested in those types they'll put a ten together on that to educate folks in that area. I'd gotten so discouraged putting together MSC threads and getting so little participation, understandably due to them being a niche, that I stopped doing them on bronzes and most smaller silver. I have loved all the excitement that folks have when I can share them at years end in a format that really shows why I'm passionate about them instead of one at a time. To answer the question though, there's no real protocol. Just a bunch of folks with passion oozing out for certain types breaking from a basic convention.
I think the protocol, to use the 1960's vernacular, is whatever turns you on. Some folks post threads on specific periods, such as Roman Republic, other folks, such as myself have a more varied list.
I consider my “Top 10” to be just that. My 10 favorite coins that I purchased that year. These type of simple top lists are my favorites and I think are overwhelmingly the most common type of list posted. I also like to post a “Budget Top 10” of my favorite inexpensive coins for that year when I purchased enough such coins to do so without overlap with my overall Top 10. Some people also like to post a Top 10 of coins that they specialize in. Shield coins, Flavians, FTRs etc. Those are fun lists too. I look forward to seeing your Top 10 @Spaniard !
I've bought around 30 coins this year... The reason why is because they all called to me for whatever reason, maybe to add to a sub set or just REALLY appealed. Braking these down into 1/3 of preference is really difficult as I bought them for a reason but I will do it and it will be hard!.. But I'll only do one and give reasons why.
Please don't think I'm being pedantic as I'm not!..Everyone to their own, and find all the threads really informative and thoroughly enjoy them. It's just I Could very easily run 3 "Top 10's" of my 2021 purchases as I've only bought 30 coins but ALL for a reason.
Then do a "Top 30" and rank them from 1-30 I'm pretty sure we will all like to see them and read about why you got them.
I agree. Nothing at all wrong with doing a 2021 wrap-up post! Plus, having your entire year of coins in one thread can be handy when you want to link the images in future threads.
That’s a bummer to hear my friend. I always enjoy your shield posts even when I don’t have anything to share in reply. I hope you’ll consider posting your shields more often than once a year!
@Ryro ....Yes completely agree!...I'm a specialist in Kashmir coinage ...How many Lakshmi with Devanagari script variations does anybody want to see unless you're that way inclined. ...Your collection of shields is most impressive though!
Paul, This year I stayed within the 10 coin limit although I could have posted many more coins I really liked. I enjoy looking at however many coins a CT member wants to post regardless of the protocol limit. In the past I posted many Diocletian era folles, so this year I left them out to show different material. I expected to see many more coins this year because the Covid-19 pandemic kept many collectors house-bound & active buying from auctions & various internet listings .
@Al Kowsky ....Good point ! Your selection was really nice...Especially those two Celts! Wow! I'll stick with 10 this year and make some serious decisions as I still feel it's the essence of the thread...
To each their own! The thing is, though, that there isn't any one "the thread," with rules or a protocol, like the Follow the Coin Theme game thread. Instead, there are many different threads, and everyone's free to post as many or as few coins as they want in their own thread or threads. From 10 all the way up to, yes, every coin they bought this year. I haven't gone quite that far, but for me personally, following a self-imposed restrictive regimen that involves comparing apples to oranges to pears (Imperials to Provincials to Republicans) and deciding which I like better so I can ultimately come up with one list of 10, would be a pointless, futile exercise. This is all supposed to be fun, so why would I do something I don't find enjoyable? (After all, I'm retired. No more hard work for me!) Nobody has to read all three of my lists, this year or last year, if they don't want to. I enjoy reading everyone's lists, no matter how long or short, and very much look forward to reading yours!
There was but that has gone away as the group of regular posters here has changed. The summery will show what the original idea was and how it developed from a 'best of' to multiple lists. This year we have had more coins shown than usual and there is still three weeks left in the year. I seem to be out of the game (not having bought ten coins yet - will three weeks change that?). In fact, not one of my 2021 purchases would have made my list in any of the preceding years since I first posted a list. Many here seem to like all their children equally and feel compelled to show them all. Even in the best years when I was buying 60-80 coins, some stood out above the others. It is natural for those of us who have been here a while to miss the good old days when Coin Talk was what we posted. Few post as much as before. Some died; some were banned; some got busy with life; some just lost interest. Things have changed and the concept of selecting favorites changed to show them all. This place belongs to those who use it now. Those who don't like the new way have the option of going away. My hobby is the coins, not the Talk.
@Spaniard, I guess there's no other rule than "post what you like". I the past years I've posted top6's and even a top3 since I thought there was not enough to show on some specific years. I would love to post a top30 someday ! Should Princes of Dombes have minted their coins with macedonian shields on them, I would certainly collect them as well : MSC are cool Q
Keep posting your Macedonian shields, @Ryro ! My heightened awareness of them is a direct result of your posts.
It actually shows that there was never one single thread with strict rules. People always posted their individual lists. Just because most people originally chose -- and the majority probably still choose -- to limit those lists to 10 doesn't mean anyone was ever "required" to do so. (Or that anyone is required to read any lists that are too long for their liking.) That's an obvious exaggeration. It's certainly not a fair representation of what I (and, I think, others) have been doing. I still choose my favorites from among all my coins purchased, and certainly don't "feel compelled to show them all." I simply decline to be limited to 10 favorites overall -- or even necessarily 10 favorites of any particular category -- and don't think there's anything inherently virtuous about the discipline of restricting oneself to that number. (After all, it's not as if the Roman system of coin denominations was always or entirely based on multiples or fractions of 10!) Plus, if I did that, I probably wouldn't be able to show any of my favorite Roman Provincials, since those will almost always come off second-best if they have to compete for attention with the best Imperials or Republicans, never mind the best Ancient Greek coins. The fact that I've posted more favorites this year than last year as a percentage of all my purchases is irrelevant. As time passes, I make fewer purchases (half as many this year as last year), but I think that the average quality is higher, and I'm much less likely to buy a coin in the first place if I don't think it's "worthy" of being considered one of my favorites. Perhaps I'm being overly defensive, but it's difficult for me to let what I consider unfair or exaggerated characterizations pass without comment.
