Coin are not a good investment, hobby yes, investment no. Coin are not a good investment, hobby yes, investment no.
Care to elaborate on that statement ? For every 1 example you can point to that went up 300% in 1 specific year, I can point to 100 that didn't. I can point to a 1,000 that dropped 600% in 1 specific year. A good investment is somthing that can be defined as being expected to increase in value over a period of time. Coins do not meet this definition. Coin values go up and down like a yo-yo on a regular basis.

I don't believe coins are or aren't a good investment. IMO, a good investment is what you pay for something under the going rate. So coins have a potential to be a good investment but coins are not always a good investment.
Depends on what kind of "investment coins" your selling. If it's graded modern bullion and commemoratives. That's not what I personally would consider "investment quality". Buy them because you like them?... sure... but dump %10 or more of your portfolio into it, bad idea IMO.
As I am sure you can point out coins that did that, but that can happen with any investment, but if you study your investment and know what to look for, one can make significant returns. For example, if only 3000 Silver Eagle exist in 1992, that is a coin that most expect to rise so it would be a smart investments. The 2008 Buffalo FS MS70 was a coin released for 960 bux and 14months later is a 3200 coin.
exactly that is the point. Knowing what is going to increase. Study coins, study stock market. Just you might be on a bigger roller coaster with coins.
******There is a grey area between collectibles and bullion. You may find an easier road posting in the bullion section. There now somebody said it. Carry on mates!
Coins = Investment --- That does not compute. Quite frankly, there are a couple of reasons that coins are a popular venue for "investors". 1. There are the "background" influences.... The cartoon images of seeing a guy sitting on a pile of gold coins, counting and examing them. When I was little (60's) - having my uncles and grandparents giving me Silver Dollars as if they were imbued with some speicial powers. (Actually that may be true ) 2. They have VALUE - especially if they are minted in Silver or Gold. And maybe in the near future Copper and Zinc. These are not beanie babies or baseball cards. There is SOME intrinsic value in what we are collecting. Some of it's true, some of it is bunk.
Glad you asked. The 2008 FS Buff MS70 is a 3200$ coin today, while the 1992 SAE FS MS70 is a 3000.00 dollar coin. But lets break this down some more. I ask your opinion, would you rather invest 10,000 in shares of a company and take the risk of the CEO having a sex scandal with the blonde secretary and the company go under and your shares be worth absolutely 0, or would u put money into a Graded coin that in the past has trended 22% a year and if it didnt do anything, you still have a base value of the metal? Face it, we never have to worry about Gold crashing because a couple of gold coins are cooking the books or getting it "on"
I hate to disagree but the last couple of PCGS graded MS70 First Strike coins that sold on EBay in the last few weeks went in the $1,900-$2,000 range. Which I think is a more realistic price. $3,000+ is a pipe dream in my opinion. It doesn't matter whether you think of EBay, coins like this sell for their fair market value there. Here is one that sold 7 days ago for $1,975. There have been more I just don't feel like posting them all... look them up if you don't believe me. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=270522122405 I buy and sell stocks on a regular basis. I also buy coins and paper money on a much more regular basis. ANY investment is a risk. Some are much more risky then others. Are their coins that you can invest in??.. sure... In my opinion were they minted in the last hundred and fifty years or so... nope.
