I have no reason to believe that it is not unc. It is just that with the way PCGS grades it, I have no way of knowing that it is unc either.
I don't like it when they grade it like that. I saw a 16 D dime in a coin store with that "grade" and the dealer couldn't tell me what was wrong with it.
The reason this coin didn't receive a grade is right there coded on the slab. The first part of the serial number ends in "91" which is the PCGS code for artificially colored. So, they basically deemed this coin had been recolored in some way and was thus ungradable yet it is still authentic so it got slabbed. What was the serial number on the slab. if a dealer can't figure out how to decode these slabs...then something is wrong with the dealer IMHO.
The seller seems honest and he accepts returns. I think it's a nice looking semi-key date cent worth $395.
There have not been any bids since the 5th. I am not sure there will be any more bids. Regardless, I am amazed at the price it is going for.
I've read that artificial coloring can hide a lot of defects to the coin's surface. So, maybe the coin actually is really harshly cleaned and that fact was covered up. Just consider it.
Everyone was too low, but Hull, you were the closest. It went for $455. I wonder if mine would go for as much. I have had people tell me it should get a 64, but PCGS said genuine 91.
