Very interesting,my guess is possibly aztec don't think its a coin. What kind of a gold test?really don't know if it was made a long time ago or a modern 5 year olds project:wacky::wacky:.

He was not specific but said it tested between 14K & 18 K. I think he's a novice at testing and maybe has a test kit. It was found in a local park in Great Barrington, Ma. He has recovered some very old stuff in this park though. A French military button, Indian Head cents, etc. This area around certainly has it's history. George Washington encamped only 5 or so miles from me in New Marlborough at one point. (Not to be confused with "Marlboro", Ma. )

To me, this looks to possibly be an owl. And perhaps was pressed into a piece of warm/hot gold. The fitting is very crude to say the least.

    Hi Tommy,
You might get better answers if you take another pic of the entire object along side a measuring device.
Whatever it is, t'was a really nice detector find.

Tommy, try reposting on the Ancients Forum. Someone over there might know.

I'm a little hesitant to post the same item twice, I know people get a bit miffed when this happens. I'm not certain it's a coin though, being only one sided. If the mods think this might be better, then by all means please do this. @lordmarcovan

Kind of looks like some gold thunderbirds I got in the 70's from Columbia Like Aztec/Thunderbirds fairly crude? I'll post some when I find them some had emeralds encrusted

Obverse reminds me of one of those ancient gods with multiple arms. (I think I see six?) I'd start by looking up "goddess with 6 arms" and go from there.

Others have said it doesn't look like a coin, although the clasp looks to be attached after the coin was minted. Better pictures would be helpful.

No matter what though, certainly a nice, valuable find.

It sort of resembles designs I’ve seen on some Indian gold pagodas, but I don’t know enough about any of that to be helpful.

I get it but you don’t do it all the time so I wouldn’t hesitate to do so.

Looks plated to me. The black areas on the high points of the design would not occur on a solid piece of gold....

Could be, but I suffer the same problem you have of not knowing enough. Before I even read your post my first thought was maybe it's an Indian temple token.

I'd say jewelry piece made to resemble a indian temple token. I'd say it is NOT a coin, and I would suspect only plated or a low fineness gold.

“Temple token” (or jewelry charm in imitation of one) sounds plausible to me. I don’t think a pagoda coin would be uniface like that?

When did gold start to be mixed with other alloys? If it's 14K & 18K then that would mean it's not pure gold, yes? From what I know, pure gold is 24K. So if this piece is 14K & 18K, it would mean then that it was created sometime after the start of other alloys being mixed in with the gold.
