Hey everyone, Just thought I'd share one of my newest additions to my colonial type set, the 1767 French Colonial with the RF Counterstamp. This one was double-struck, which is REALLY hard to find on these... it's only the second one I've seen. And not to mention it's in great condition. Ryan
I'm not sure, but from what I've been reading is that there is an A mint mark on the obverse center that stands for Paris (can't see it much because of the counterstamp), and the RF counterstamp they added so they were usable in the colonies? I think
Okay, listed in Breen as #701, page 58. Also, listed in the Red Book, Page #51, RF= Republique Francaise Interesting bit of history. and yes: The A stands for the Paris mint.
Well one thing is for sure it woudnt have stood for Republic Francaise unless it was a much later counterstamp ie after 1792 (This is when the 1st republic was declaired) I am therfore inclined to believe the coin was counterstamped sometime after this date when news of the event reached Guadeloupe, Lovely find :hail:
Per Breen: "Pursuant to a Decree of the Extraordinary Assembly of Guadeloupe, Sept 28, 1793, the remainder (...) received a countermark of RF in oval..." So, yes, post 1792.
Thanks for the info guys. It's truly an amazing piece of history, and when I saw it was double struck, I was just blown away.
