I’ve been checking a lot of Lincoln Cents lately, and among the buckets of coins a friend’s given me I’ve turned up 9 coins dated 1917 – this one looks similar to 1 other in detail. I’m not sure if it’s a DDO, any opinions shall be appreciated. (If the scan is inadequate, please let me know, and I’ll provide a photo.)

    Most Appreciated, A.J.

You will need to take better pictures...They are not clear enought to tell...However, there IS a DDO variety for this date....here's a picture of one of the portions of the coin that shows the most doubling.[IMG]

    Paul,

Thanks for the photo! I viewed the coin under my microscope, and it's a definite match to your photo (TRUST).

That's great! It seems like it might be worth a fair amount of money...Coppercoins.com lists this vareity at 175 bucks in F, $350 in VF and all the way up to $2,000 in MS60...so that's quite an awesome find!!

I think this error must be way under valued and much rarer than the famous 55. I have only seen 1 , certified PCGS 8 and it was 225.00 well over the current value at PCGS and it sold.

Some of the so called DDO 1917 cents I have seen only have a thicker date.
Nowhere else on the coin can you see doubling. Just that the numbers 1917 are heavier and thicker.
Somewhere I have one put away but could never tell if it is a true DDO.

It seems to reason that the coins got into circulation and many of them wore down thus eliminating the doubling prominence as seen on the 55. Even more to this line of thought would be to ask yourself howmany 55 DD's have you seen graded VG8. I had a 55 DD that was ANACS AU detail net EF45 because of a rim ding that the dealer I sold it to had to ask me , "where is the damage" and the nick was the only thing I could come up with. So it could be that with a war breaking out and communications not being what they are today the coin got out and B4 it was widelly discovered many had worn down to the point of no longer looking like a DD??? Your thoughts?

It was first reported in 1977, so that was 60 years after minting, through depression, hard times and war. How many 1917 were still extent after 1977. There are also a lot of MDD coins, so the match has to be exact.

To start with, the IN GOD WE TRUST and the date don't match the image you provided. I played with his images to lighten them up. The very pronounced bulge, for example on the lower portion of the S of TRUST, does not exist on his coin.

His coin is not a DDO.

    Thanks,
    Bill

It is hard to tell from the photo of the date, but normally the end of top horizontal bar of the doubled "7" is significantly thicker than the bottom of the vertical. Maybe a sharper photo of the date would help. I would say that it is not the true DDO myself at this point.

    I am sorry, and you are correct. When I first looked at this thread, the OP had no pictures and had posted;
Therefore, I was comparing mine to n_sandler4's and his is authentic. I did not even realize the OP had posted his pictures.

That happens to me also. When comparison photos come up, I sometimes forget which one is the "suspect" :)

Well since this post has gotten so much attention . What do you think is harder to come by a 55 DD or the 17 DD. I have been collecting for 30+ years and it seems to me that the 1917 in any grade if genuine could be a very good buy right now . If you can find one? Any thoughts?

That coin looks like a 1917 D, but the D has been worn down. If you look close you can see traces of it. Sorry, keep looking and one may turn up.
If you find the true 1917 DDO you will know it. Here is a pic of the one I found.

I have not had any luck finding a 1955 DDO yet, but I keep looking.
