I'm stoked to have added this coin to my collection. DN GRATIANVS P F AVG VRBS - ROMA, Roma holding Victory. 2.10g Trier mint, 367-375 AD. (I really like the reverse on this coin). And here is my old one from the same mint, it's literally half it's size at 1.05g! Although I already have a broken coin of Valens, a nice siliqua was always on my bucket list. But I had some criteria, 1. It should not be clipped 2. All legends should be present 3. No flan cracks/ too worn/ other damages 4. Should not break my bank So far no such siliqua had all these qualities, until I found this coin of Gratian from a local dealer for a sum of 110 usd! Definitely one of my top 10 coin for this year. Post any siliqua or your recent upgrades!
Here is my exemplar of the same type. Obv.: DN GRATIA NVS PF AVG Rev.: VRBS ROMA -- TRPS Mint: Trier The coin is in near perfect condition with attractive iridescent toning. Below is a Siliqua of Valens Obv.: DN VALEN S PF AVG Rev.: VRBS ROMA -- TRPS Mint: Trier Gratian won in AD 378 the battle of Argentovaria against the Alamanni. Gratian was the last emperor to cross the Rhine. Valens lost in AD 378 the battle of Adrianople against the Goths. In some respect the defeat at Adrianople was the beginning of the end of the Roman Empire in the west.
Jay, I managed to score the Valens siliqua pictured below at a Great Collections auction for $26.00 . I later put it in CNG 118 auction & it sold for $354.00 ! I did keep the Valens siliqua pictured below that cost me slightly more than the 1st coin. Neither one of these coins are great examples, but I kept the 2nd one because it was heavier & I wanted an example from this famous hoard .
