After @expat post I felt inclined to post this banknote I found in this book. The book is dated 1857 but I do not read German so am clueless as to what I have in the book. I was pleased to see the prices that go with this note on EBAY. The back of the book reads "Jugendschrifien" along with the date "1857" and has a crest with an eagle. The binding has what appears to be "Pauline Schanz, Maddien-Schidtale"? Not sure all the spelling is correct. These notes also appear hard to find without stains. img201.jpg img202.jpg img203.jpg img198.jpg The book was recovered at my local landfill shed. Not bad for free. If anyone can help on the book, it would be appreciated.

The first side means that the German official has been paid his dues. The second side states that whomever redeems this note will receive the stated value. It also states that anyone faking these notes will, if caught, be imprisoned for not less than two years. The book iis a childs book but my Wife in unsure whether the note came with the purchase of the book or was used as a bookmark

Thank you so much for this. I'm sure the note likely was a bookmark.

The note is One Rupee, German East Africa., worth more than a few cents.
