Here are a couple more to bump the thread along... 2006 $20 Notes to check against your list: FACE: SN [lower left] [upper right] / BACK: [lower right] • ID 30083898B [G3] [G125] / [118] D4 • ID 30083899B [G3] [G146] / [127] D4
Two early $20's from the intaglio presses: IE 20970799 D (A2, A184, 181) IF 02338346 B (D2, D100, 114) Will continue to check my $20's and report any undetermined or contradictory notes.
In another thread I posted a rumor I had heard on New Year's Eve from a person that works at the Washington BEP...it was about "oversized" $20 bills. I thought he was talking about the new ones (2009), but it may have been the 2006 series. Anyway, this guy says that the BEP is quietly collecting up and destroying the "out of spec" notes. That's what I heard...don't know if it's true or not (or any more details).
Here are the ones I have...they all appear to be the old press: EDIT/Question: The chart is a bit confusing to me (a currency novice). My "IL" series notes all have the larger plate numbers on the front plate. Does that mean they were made on the old press at Ft. Worth? ...or were they made on the new press? Question: Why do some series have a three (3) plate set rotation while others have a four (4) plate set rotation? (I don't know if I'm using the correct terminology...but that's what it looks like to me.) Because the old presses used four plates, while the new ones use three. So, yes, your IL..E notes are from the new presses. If you can find some runs of consecutive notes from certain older series, you'll observe that the BEP has also had one-plate and two-plate presses at various times. Fort Worth notes have a large *back* plate number, and an "FW" on the face. New-press notes have a large *face* plate number. (So far all the new-press notes are from DC, but FW should be getting new presses too at some point...presumably the resulting notes would have the large plate numbers on *both* sides?)
A couple more to bump the thread along... 2006 $20 Notes to check against your list: FACE: SN [lower left] [upper right] / BACK: [lower right] • IB 53759065E [E2] [E390] / [313] B2 • IC 51734202B [C1] [C150] / [164] C3 • IE 31850441C [H4] [H108] / [113] E5
Two more early $20's, also from the intaglio presses: ID 49359655 B (G3, G159, 163) IE 20970799 D (A2, A184, 181) Will continue to check my $20's and report any undetermined or contradictory notes.
Interesting...thanks! Btw, are bills made by the new presses any more or less valuable than the others?
Probably not, at least not where 2006 $20's are concerned, since both were printed in large quantities. As more denominations get converted to the new presses, and as the change to Series 2009 progresses, there's a chance that a scarce combination will be created--e.g., it might happen that the BEP prints a very small quantity of old-press 2009 $10's before switching to the new presses, or something like that. In such a case, the scarce variety might end up acquiring a collector premium. (But the BEP will most likely try to avoid such situations; after all, there's not much point making plates you're hardly going to use....) It also might not hurt to hold on to notes from the mixed old/SOI print runs, if you happen to run across them. If it should ever become popular to collect these varieties by run (as web notes are often collected), the old-press notes from the mixed runs might be tough to find (as the non-web notes from the web ranges are). Of course, since we're talking about $20's rather than $1's, there's probably not an excellent chance that such collecting will catch on widely, just because of the total face value involved....

First let me say I have no clue what this is about as I am a coin person who owns very little paper. I have a stack of thirteen 2006 crisp unc never folded never used $20 bills which just came from a bank. They still smell like fresh ink. It is a consecutive numbered run IF 13656154 E to IF 13656166 E . The number under the serial is F6 The number in the bottom left corner [obverse] is E1 What I am confused with is the number up in the top right corner. The lowest note IFxxxxxx54 has E364 the next note has E357 next E361 next E364 next E357 next E361 and so on going through the stack. Every three notes it starts over. The reverse has 249, 250 and 251 repeating every 3 notes over and over again 249, 250, 251. Anyone care to explain to this metal head what the paper people mean by these numbers? Is it some sort of plate positioning? Oh, and are these worth keeping together as thirteen CU consecutive notes or should I just spend them? It is kind of a pretty looking stack of bills..
