If so a small snake:wacky::wacky:starts at the S in states and ends around the O in Monticello. 20211118_150839.jpg 20211118_150856.jpg 20211118_150912.jpg

What feature of the obverse design elements would cause that contour? What is the web site for dies? I tried mad dies no luck.

And that's not a die crack?

is it raised or incused? it doesn't look like any die clash I've ever seen, not saying it isn't, just saying it doesn't really fit the description, it's wrong for the overlay that's here for it:
    http://www.maddieclashes.com/five-cent-overlays/

also doesn't look like a die crack either. maybe a stainless steel wire dented into the die face and fell out and left behind a gouge in the die face that meanders on successive strikes? Maybe a tool gouged the die face?

    I'm grasping at straws really...

Doesn't line up for a die clash of Jefferson's head.

Thank you for the overlay. I don't think that's a clash.

It's a crack and don't talk back! :D Seriously, look at how the letters crawl over it. It's not a scratch because a scratch would have cut into those letters. And it's not a clash because the overlay is wrong for it, as was pointed out.

Doesn't look like a die crack either,
at least based on the photos and lighting.

The line looks raised to me, which might make it a die crack, however, I will defer to Fred Weinberg.
What do you think it is, Mr. Weinberg?

I'm with John on this one, at the least some damage to the reverse die face.
