I am curious to the intentions of everybody on this site. Why are you into coins? Investments? Savings? Family? Collection?
I feel collector isn't the right word. i feel that Numismatist is a much better term, sure i collect but i'm also in it for the study and advancement of numismatics
I guess the best way to understand why members participate, is to view the forum topics. To best understand what CT is not, review the forum rules. Welcome to CT. Tell us a bit about your Collecting interest. Thanks.
I use numismatic coins as an investment. I study the market and invest in coins with very low population and high grades, that I know will move in the market quickly. For instance, my 2008 Buffalos did 300% in about 14 months.
Oh so you have no collector interest at all ? most people here have a specific area of interest. It's a great way of sharing an experience with building a collection. Many here are finely astute in their knowledge.
I hold onto some coins here and there, but I have found that certified and graded coins tend to out gain bullion in every year. I mean if I can make 30% off of a tangible assett that will never have a 0 value, why not? You never have to worry about a CEO cooking the books or a company going under because of one personal decision with gold. Its a safe source of investment. That being said, I study the market 10 hrs a day and know what to look for. Does that make sense?
For me, it's primarily historical interest. I collect primarily ancient coins, and I really love having a piece of history in my hand. If the prices off all the coins in the world dropped by 99% tomorrow, while I think most people here would panic over all the money they lost, I'd simply be thrilled that I would now get to handle, study, and own all of the pieces that were previously outside of my price range.
I'm also very involved in investing, but don't really consider coins to be part of that. Although it's nice to look through Coin Values and see something I bought some time ago now worth a lot more, I more than likely bought it because I really liked it, and not with any particular return in mind. jenkinscody21, if you are aware of any good financial or investing forurms, could you send me a message with a link? The few I've seen all seems to have been taken over by people with their own agenda, and not just chat and sharing information.
I see. I can honestly say with certainty, that all of our members here have a great passion for owning a little bit of history, and perhaps completing a type set or a specific series. I have been a collector for almost 56 years now and I've loved every minute of the pursuit and achievement.
Carly, I am not aware of any investing forums. An average investor tends to do better than a person that uses a firm. What you hear on TV is just excitement and bright lights, I have made all of my money on my own. Just study the market. Now i am party of a company that deals in precious metals investments, and am very happy to be a part of that. Our job is to provide clients with knowledge and results, not a promise. Beware of guarantees, because as we all know, nobody can guarantee anything. If you have anything else, please respond or message me. I would be glad to explain what I have done and help you in any way.
For me, the best way to describe why...after I found a 1910 Wheatie in change. I hit me that this thing has been in circulation through world changing events. Who knows who held it at one time or another - a president, a famous actress...where has it been - WW2 France? Hawaii? Did it ever leave the state?? Just to hold a tangible piece of US history and contemplating all the questions - to me that's the biggest reason. That's another reason I feel coins found in circulation - for the most part - are the best finds. It's just another level to buy "ready made" coins for a collection and too sanitary for me. I rarely collect as an investment, but that is a good by-product.
It's interesting that you would ask this question, because just today I came to the realization that maybe my coin collecting is a bit more compulsion than simple hobby. It's how I deal with stress, I don't hold much monetary interest in what I have I just collect what I like, I'm certainly not great at grading....when I need to unplug or feel a little better, a new piece can usually do the trick. I dunno. Maybe I'm nuts. I also 2nd what jenkinscody just said. I'm interested in where my treasures have been along the way.
It all started when I decided to fill up my adult son's Whitman penny folder. He never showed interest in collecting coins, so I decided to take over. Then I found his equally ignored nickel folder and began working on that one also. This is fun! I bought some dime and quarter folders and started plugging them, too. Eventually, I was able to fill all but a few holes the the folders--and this annoyed me. So I decided to "hit the bank", exchanging 20 dollar bills for lots and lots of coins. Am I obsessive-compulsive???
This is common practice in the hobby. I've filled all the current series (except for some of the low mintage 2009s), and I really don't cherry pick; so I do not roll search anymore.
I came to this site looking for specific info on a coin a while back - it turned out to be the best place online to discuss, share stories, learn valuable changes in the hobby, etc. I just use it now as a way to unwind after a long day at work and see whats new in the coin world!
My same thoughts. CT is the best Tool on the internet. It gives me the info i need to grow with my coins of choice.(Morgan) Thanks Ron H,
Just simply for the fact that I am a collector and I love the hobby. Yes my family did have something to do with me getting into coin collecting, but I liked it, still like, stuck to it, and am still sticking to it I'm a coin junkie, and always will be
