Coin Shops & Odd Business Hours?

I'm in California and it seems all the local coin shops have very odd business hours.

I only know of one that is open on the weekends. During the week, the coins shops around here keep banker's hours...open at 10 and close by 4 or even by 2 on Fridays.

The only way I can make it to a local shop is if I take time off work. Is this sort of practice common for coin shops in your area? One would think they would want to be open when it's convenient for the customers; not themselves.

Are they so profitable that they don't need to operate on typical business hours?

Shop owners and dealers, please help me understand :rolling:

My local California shop (Carlsbad Village Coins) hours are 10-5 Tue - Sat.
Except for being closed Monday, that's nearly the same hours as my bank.

I'm in northern California, and my local store is open 10 am to noon, I think 3 or 4 days a week, but two of the days are Friday and Saturday, so it works for me.

The other one is two towns over, but he's open something like 10 to 6 everyday.

  5. My guess is that the dealer may have another job or travels to shows and is on the road. I am on the east coast and the coin shop I use is open 10-5 every day except Sunday. People show up before 10am to try to get a look at the new merchandise. I am a regular and travel 30 minutes to the shop so the dealer lets me come in early while he sets up the displays. Get to know the dealer and maybe you can work something out. TC

Call, they may open by appointment if it's worth their while.

The shop I visit is open from 9-5 seven days a week. I believe they're closed on Christmas day, but thats the only time I know of.

That was a problem the original owner of my shop had. If it wasn't really busy he'd leave even if the hours on the window said he should be open. This is a very quick and easy way to loose buisness in a hurry. People will only show up a time or 2 when someone is not there and then they won't bother again.

Most of dealers that I patronize are elderly, living off their retirement and only maintain a brick and mortar to get out of the house and away from thier wives for a few hours each day.

While 6 hours sounds like very little to you, it's an eternity in a coin shop. You get some foot traffic but it's never really THAT busy and most of the folks are "just looking".

He is open by appointment to the seasoned collectors who want to view something specific, he actively seeks out items on a collectors wish lists, he has card games in the back room with his other old coin guy cronies but as a general rule, they are only open to pass the time until they die and get away from the nagging spouse.

Hey remember coin collecting is supposed to be an "old white guys" hobby, so they probably feel most of their customers are older and retired so they can come in at those odd hours. :)

One of the shops I go to doesn't open until noon, and I think closes around 5 or 6. Closed Sundays and Mondays. He seems to do fine; it's a supply and demand thing.

I find it next to impossible to go to the coin store for this very reason--9 to 5 Tuesday-Saturday. If they would just stay open until 6.

And those of you with more than a single store, consider yourselves fortunate. Technically there are two in my small city, but the second is 45 minute journey:yawn:

The only coin shop in my area (that i'm aware of) is open on Sat-Sun 8-5. Other than that all i know of are fleamarkets in the N. GA area. If anybody happens to know about another one close to Gainesville/Cleveland, let me know.

It's true here in Georgia too. The dealer I go to told me that the storefront was just the next step up for his collecting. He's not too concerned about making a living with it, although he does buy and sell gold.

I live in Massachusetts and my local shop is open Monday-Saturday 10:00am.-5:30pm. It is a nice shop and has about 3-5 people working during business hours.

Many stores have similar hours and you constantly hear them saying how they have no buisness. Gee I wonder why. There is a magic shop in my town that opens at 2PM and stays open until at least 8PM. One coin store I know doesn't open until 3 or 4 PM and stays open until about 8PM. Around me it is sort of pending on the neighborhood. In nice areas many stores are open evenings. In the rest of the area your lucky to find any store open when the Sun goes down.
Also, due to the 4 coin shows every Month in the area, one each Sunday, many of the coin stores have very short hours since they do most of their buisness at the shows. Some coin stores have closed due to so many coin shows and not much buisness left for a store.
It appears that some buisnesses are still in the dark ages as to store hours. I remember when you couldn't buy meat at a grocery store on Sundays. It is still against the law around here to sell Alcoholic drinks before Noon on Sundays. Auto dealers can not be open on Sundays.
I think the massive amount of buisness going on with the internet will eventually solve these situations.

As a former Southern Californian, I think you will find these hours
    Fairly common though odd!!:eat:

I think the strange hours are related to alot of coin dealers selling on ebay.

I sure don't keep odd hours.... when my sign says I'll be here, I'll be here.

It snowed a foot last night and I'm here first thing...on time... hahaha!
