Hi Everyone, Does anyone know if the mint continued inserting W mint mark quarters into circulation with the 'Crossing the Delaware' quarters?
Thanks for replying. I'm sad to see them go. They were really fun for kids - they helped keep my nephews' interest.
The crossing the Delaware unfortunately got the shaft for everything eventhough it was the best design they had made in a while and will make for the next several years
No W’s for this year but it’s a great design. Everyone I meet in public is talking about it s as no 2021 is the only year with this design.
I finally found my first 2 crossing quarters yesterday in my wife's bedroom on the dresser. I can't get so lucky. I barely use cash lol. I snatched them up and put them in 2x2 and set them on my bureau in my office.
I got a few rolls of them from the bank. One of the tellers was apparently saving them and another teller gave them to me when I asked for quarter rolls and they said they don't have any and I complained about the Coin Shortage. He said "Hold on a second" and came back with a handful of Crossing the Delaware rolls. I will save one for myself, but after that, I was thinking of selling them on eBay or something. I just don't know if it's worth the effort for the $5 I would make on them as I have a job and am really busy. Any advice how I can make more than $5 on them? (I don't know how to and don't have the tools to search through rolls for errors that are not clear to the naked eye. So, that isn't really an option for me.)
eBay really isn't much effort. Takes about 5 minutes to make a listing and then you just wait until they sell. The only other option is search them and hope there would be ones worth grading and then youd either have to do eBay again or send them to GC
Just my opinion, not worth the selling the rolls on ebay if time is a concern, yeah it's easy to list and sell but winter is here and then a post office visit might not be such an easy thing for some people. You don't say if it's P or Ds. though and if it's Ds, I have't seen anything this noticeable on ebay yet. Anyways, I'd take some free time and just search the rolls for the huge die chip off of his hat. that's where the money is right now on the 2021Ps if you find it and the bigger the more money. it's like $5 -$10 for the small ones, and something like this can go $50-$100 or more on ebay currently. this die chip/Interior die break is quite large and should be no problem seeing or identifying, even the smaller ones that sell for a few bucks are easy to notice. it's all off of his hat. the more of "eplurib" it covers the more they sell for.
Well this would explain perhaps why I don't come across any of these quarters anymore. I think the last one I found in my pocket change was a few months ago. Now that the word out is they are no longer made, everyone will be looking for them and hanging onto them if found. Glad I found & hung onto the ones I came across in my change, roughly 6 - 8 dollars worth of them in total.
Thankfully that hair brained idea died with the former Mint Director...two for the price of one out the door.
This is fantastic info! Thank you so much John for posting all the info and the picture! I will definitely look out for this error. I will even get my little coin-collecting nephews on board to look for this error with me. I didn't look to see if the rolls are P or D, I just assume they are P since I'm in the Northeast. Thank you again John!!
One more question, if I may. If I do find this error, is it the kind of thing that people are paying a lot for now, but as time goes on and more are found, people pay less as the years go on? Or, are these kinds of errors sold for more in a few years from now? Of course I'm counting my chickens before they hatch, but I'm wondering whether to hold on to these if I find any, in the hope that they will be worth more later, or to sell them now and cash in on the current interest because people pay less for them as time goes on because they aren't the new and exciting thing on the block.
Generally they will go down, these types of things are fads and they are hot while there is hype but people won't care so much down the road. I do think because of the size on this one, it is significant though it's got be be classed as an interior die break once it's over 4mm in diameter and not just a die chip so you never know if it will have some longevity. But generally when they get on eBay and have names like "hamburger hat" or "kings crown" it's a fad and once those people buying go away so does the prices. Still I think each one is a $5 or $10 maybe $20 at least long term just not crazy money like now since it's hot. Also depends on how many turn up out there too. I'd say they likely won't be worth more later than they are now. None of these types of things ever do hold up. However if you did find more than one it wouldn't hurt to hold one for yourself to see how it goes long term, worst case you wouldn't be out anything, a quarter is still a quarter and that's all it cost you.
Thank you so much for your help John and for explaining all of that. I very much appreciate it. I'm guessing from what you wrote that a class of "Interior Die Break" holds more weight numismatically than "Just a Die Chip". I don't know much about error coins because I don't have the tools or the time to delve into it. The most I do is give a naked-eye look. I found a penny in my change which was missing the "L" in Liberty that I posted here a while back, but was told it wasn't worth much. I saved it anyway because I like it. I like errors that you don't need a microscope or a college degree in numismatics to see. The other errors, sure, they are impressive if you know what you're looking at. But until I can afford to invest in the equipment and time it takes to delve into real error searches, I'm going to stick with my naked-eye system. Thank you again for your help and explaining everything you did so clearly!
Two separate quarters here. One is the "W" mint quarters and the other is the "Crossing The Delaware" quarter. I wasn't referring to the "W" mint quarter when I stated that I have between $6 - $8 dollars worth of quarters. I was referring to the "Crossing The Delaware" quarter. I've got only about 9 "W" mint quarters in total and none of them are the "Crossing The Delaware" style. I'm not even sure if they did a "Crossing The Delaware" quarter at the "W" mint. Did they? I don't think so because the "W" quarters were minted from 2019 - 2020. The "Crossing The Delaware" was minted in 2021 and others on this forum have indicated that this will be the one and only year for this design.
