Nickel afternoon. Found other stuff, as always, but primarily nickels.

Nope. Prior to 1975, an "S" mintmark does not automatically indicate a proof, since they were still producing some business strikes at San Francisco up to then.

Which is what that 1970-S nickel is.

Still fun to find S-mint coins in circulation, regardless.

OPEN THEM SO WE CAN SEE WHAT’S INSIDE, already! :p

I remember finding some rolls at the bank (this was back in the ‘90s), which had the old postal codes (pre-ZIP codes, so pre-1963) under the bank names on the wrappers. That was exciting. Sure enough, the contents were almost all pre-1960 coins, with a goodly sampling of War nickels and a few Buffaloes (some dateless, some as old as the 1920s).

I’ve never found a V-nickel in circulation, though. I think those earlier Buffs are the oldest nickels I’ve found “in the wild”.

(Not counting detector finds, of course. I did dig some V-nix and one 1873 Shield nickel, back in the day.)

First, @kaufenanger, thank you for stopping by!
And C, i have 250 in hand, and I've given away about 10. That's 260 total. Let's see, that's 10,000,000-260= a whole lot left out there! (Although keep it between you and me, i am trying to find them all. Our little secret ;))

Oldest coin I've found, to this day, and the only V nickel I've found in circulation. My grandfather had one in his collection, i thought it was foreign, but it's a 1911, ten years older than the one i found!

Also, i must thank you for the V nickel you sent me. I'm sure you don't remember, but it was a "consolation" for it taking a few days to ship a prize. It was a 1901 V nickel, same year as what i found, but much nicer, lol. Yours is still in a safe place, while the one i found is in a ziplok, lol.
