I'm not sure about the proof planchet strike? I can't tell from pictures. Here is another 1971 d of mine. It is ms65 cac friendly eagle variety.

The MS61 grade kind of cracks me up a little. How do they know it's Type II?

Because of the lip around the edge. I guess the type 1 didn't have that.

I couldn't help but to pick this 1855 o seated half dime this morning. I knew that it was special as I have an 1855 o specimen already in my set,but the reverse as well the obv. Had things going on that my eye saw that wouldn't allow me to pass on it.
The obv. From rusted dies commonly found on New Orleans mint coins.
The obv. Is thought to be obv. #2 ? rev. B.3? Rariety R ?-? Cud right stem . However only 3 existing specimens are known! That wasn't known at purchase ,but again I was sure by the die crack and cud...this was a marriage that I didnt have in my collection.....but I do now ! :)

    Paddy,

    Wow, the legendary 1855-O V-2b!
    Great find!
    Thanks for sharing.

Here is the updated roster of examples I know of:
    1. MS-61 2013-1 Heritage
    2. AU-58 Crain #1924 (plate in the Top 100)
    3. EF-40 2019-3 ebay gfrc-coins
    4. VF-35 Pedersen collection, has a scratch and a couple of dings
    5. VF-30 HalfDimeDude example! * =Paddy54 ;)
    6. F-holed 2018-3 ebay stockmaniac (was still on ebay last time I checked...)
    7. G-det 2018-3 ebay nickels444 huge gouges or punch on both sides

In my most recent research, I realized that this cannot be a later die state of the V-2,
because the V-2 has obverse cracks that are not present on this die pair.
So I'm calling it V-3 now.
Not just a cool cud reverse die state, but a rare die pair!

The news on Ron was indeed sad.
I had noticed he had been posting a lot of photos of his favorite Buffalos on the forum.
He stayed active right until he passed....

    Sincerely,

    Clint

Took over the half dime research after " Mr. Halfdime " passed a few years back. He is the go to guy on any half dime issues,or finds. Clint can be found over at the Collector Universe message boards.
He has helped me on several occasions with iding die marriages. Not a bad $45 investment eh? ;)
On a cleaned rusted die coin. And this is why I pick.....

Look at the top serif of the 2 and compare it to this coin which is an 1828 w/Knob Curl base 2 variety:
