how many CT people have had break-ins?

One of the robberies in my neighoborhood was when some neighbors went on vacation. A moving van pulled during the day. Began removing everything from thier home. One nighbor asked what was happening and the so called movers said the people that lived there liked it so much where they were at, they decided to stay there. The so called movers took a large safe, bolted to the floor and wall too. An alarm system was in place and the company called and asked the so called movers if everything was OK. They said yes and then removed the alarm system too.
The vacationers came home to a rather empty, dark house. Even took the light bulbs.

Well i can tell you that something was not done correct there. You cant access the bolts that are bolting the safe down unless you open the door of the safe and remove the floor. one of my safes weights over 500 pounds and have 4 bolts to the floor there is no way to remove it without the safe open. Plus my house alarm if it goes off they send police if you dont give a code word when they call no matter what (i said the wrong code word once and had 2 sheriffs at my door 2 min later) :headbang:. That really sucks to have you house cleaned out but im confident that its not going to happen.

You'll love this story. In 2000 we lived in Baltimore and someone broke into our house. Not much was there of value but they did take some Confederate money I had under a glass table top. This happened in broad daylight. Now for the rest of the story ... My wife happened to come home and saw what had happened , she then called me and the Baltimore police. They showed up in about 30 minutes. They then had my wife go and open each of the closets to see if anyone was still there ... go figure ... makes you feel real good about the Baltimore police dept. Then , as my wife was giving details about the break-in these morons the guy is writing down the notes on the back of his hand !! Needless to say , the next day I put out the For Sale sign and we moved to Maine.

 

I agree. Maybe they had a jack hammer and just took a nice chunk of floor too. Crooks would have to remove an external supporting wall to remove my safe, thanks to remodeling after I had it inside. It's twice as wide as any door or window in my home. I guess if they want to remove a wall they can have it......after they dig out from the roof collapse.

As I mentioned these guys had moving equipment and well knew what they were doing. I'm sure it wasn't their first such job. If they had a moving van you can be assured they had moving equipment.

 

Not really uncommon you know. Just such a shame so many watch TV and see the police with all this modern crime detecting STUFF at a crime sceen. At all the robberies around here they don't even bother to write things down on the back of thier hands or anywhere. Sometimes you'll be asked if you want to make this a formal complaint about the robbery, you would have to go to the City Hall during working hours, to fill in all the paper work. I've seen seveal garages right after a break in where the police just looked and then left. Fingerprints? Yeah, right. For TV only.

 

I've not had any, but 99% of everything I have is at the bank. I do have 5 pistols scattered around the house, so if they do it, they better hope I'm not at home.

I remember reading on here that ??? PennyLady? PennyLane?, or maybe it was somebody else, that was robbed of suitcases of coins, or stands...something like that. It's been a while since I read it. It seems like she had a booth at coin shows???

 

I own many pistols, revolvers, rifles, and have a concealed carry permit. My state has a bunch of laws which I follow. I recommend that everyone check their local laws regarding legal storage of loaded accessible & unlocked firearms in your respective states. You don't want the crooks to get your guns & you don't want the police to confiscate them & press charges against you either.

 

I have my concealed carry too. I've had mine for several years, and carry a Ruger LCP everywhere I go except the courthouse, schools, Post Office, etc., where it's illegal. I'm hardly ever without it.
I would recommend everyone take the course whether you carry or not. It's a really good class, and reinforces safety.

 

I had a briefcase stolen from my truck. The thieves threw it away 2 houses down, it had papers and computer cds. Nothing was taken They didn't know one OS disk was worth over 1K., and the other disks were PNC bank operating systems disks.( I had a 2 week job updating bank hardware.) Last fall I put a peace sign flag on my porch, and it was gone the next morning. I bought another, it's still there.

 

You could drop a nuclear bomb on my bank and that safe would still be there. Of course the door hangs open all day.:hammer:

As for all this stuff at home (safes, guns, etc.) any security system can be defeated someway somehow. It's just a matter of "is it worth the effort?"

 

That applies to banks as well, though.

I had the window of my car busted out a few years ago in a hotel parking lot. They got a couple of Meucci cues, but that was it.

It was a pain replacing the window, the insurance was a hassle, and they raised my rates...that was the worst part. Next time, I'll just leave my doors unlocked.

 

Final chapter

The trial for this low-life dragged-on for 11 months. He was finally sentenced in November 2010. He got a total of 10 years for the burglaries in my town and is eligible after 6 years.

 

Now this chapter is over

I attended every trial date & watched his attorney get continuance after continuance. For the first 2-months after his arrest, he was free from jail. He was out on probation for a previous assault conviction and he was also on probation for a previous burglary crime spree. Do you believe that a guy on probation had been arrested for a new assault and 4 additional burglaries & this guy was still walking around town?!

After watching this guy walk out of the courtroom twice, I contacted the probation office (in a different town) & got him re-arrested. Then, after my submitting a letter to the judge, the judge in my case increased his bail another $70,000. At least this kept him in jail for the rest of the trial on my burglary.

The criminal justice folks are just swamped with individuals like this one. This guy probably would have continued to burglarize and make bail infinitely.

Our prosecutor made a deal for 5-years eligible after 3 on my burglary and 5-years eligible after 3 on a subsequent attempted burglary. These two sentences are consecutive less the months he had served in 2010 during the trial. He accepted the deal because the alternative would be some charge of habitual/career criminal which would have included a 10 year sentence.

I learned today that he got handed a 5 year and a 6 year sentence for his subsequent crimes in another town. Therefore, he should be locked-up for a while. Now this chapter is over.
