Does anyone here have any experience with any numismatic wiki site, positive or negative?

I do not know how many Wiki type sites there are out there concerning our hobby. I happened to fall into this one which does have quite a bit of information on it. In the foreign coins section it looks like a lot of them are sourced in major auction catalogs. It claims to be a shoot off of Collector's Universe. Here is the link if you care to look: http://www.coinfactswiki.com/wiki/Main_Page

My question is this does anyone here have any experience with any numismatic wiki site, positive or negative. I notice that on our search link it mentions searching Wiki. Is this connected to that one? What is our relationship to that link? Nothing turns up when you use it anyway.

Wiki's are only as good as the people who post to them. As a general rule you will find good information and bad information. And if you don't know how to sort the good from the bad then you might as well not have any.

If you are interested just go to Google and you will see this if you type in Coins:
    Results 1 - 10 of about 53,500,000 for coins
This would indicate if you were to attempt to view each one, spent one minute doing so, with no sleep or rest, it would take you 102 years to complete that task. Assuming of course that no one adds or removes any of them during your 102 year attempt. :D:D

Are you trying to say that this list is not needed?:rolling: Information overload is worse than no information in that you have to figure out which one is the truth.

Not at all. I'm just pointing out you now have something to do for the next 102 years in case you were bored. :hammer::hammer:

I contribute entries to Coin Facts Wiki. Some of my coins are posted there. And I am friends with others who also contribute. I say as much as I am certain of for any coin I post, no more. But the information on Coin Facts Wiki, like any other site, should be cross-referenced. And not just with another site that may have plagiarized it.

Who or what is a Wiki?????

  10. I agree fully with this assessment. I use Wiki sites (including those about coins) only as a springboard to other sites that can corroborate the information. TC

I also use as a springboard or starting point. I find it is a good place to start for a general description and information. During that 102 years of reading it would be nice to stop and shower occasionally.

Basically, it is a website users can modify, and if enough users work long enough they eventually create the Encyclopedia Wikipedia (which is apparently no more error-prone than the Britannica!). Yes you should always seek to corroborate Wikipedia information from other sources, but still, Wikipedia is a dandy first address for just about anything you want to find out about.
