Usually when I see a single chop on a coin I find it tasteful, but in this case this one is so central, large and hideous I think it destroys the eye appeal of the coin. What do you guys think of this chop? https://www.ebay.com/itm/194282746903?hash=item2d3c277417:g:RnwAAOSwwzZhFB2I
If the coin is real and the chop mark is real, I see nothing hideous about it. It represents the true purpose and use of the coin.
I see a chop mark, which by definition is a disfigurement of the original coin, albeit for legitimate reasons in commerce. I've seen many worse, in the sense that there were a lot more of them and they weren't as clear.
I have problems understanding the terminology. To me, this is a chop: and this is a countermark: and this is a counterstamp:
...not a Trade dollar expert, but my thoughts are...fake. As far as the chop goes, such a heavy chop would damage the reverse where it was countered. In addition, the coin itself looks fake. That's my two cents worth. Or should I say my 100 cents worth.
I am far from a Trade Dollar expert, but the difference at the circled location would make me suspect authenticity until I could confirm there was a variety difference possibility. At this point, I would check others to see which one is the odd ball.
I suppose it could be a ding that just looks like the perfect size to be a horizontal stroke in the design.
I like it much better than: https://www.ebay.com/itm/393694862069?hash=item5baa0adaf5:g:llQAAOSww41hjHms
The coin has a number of problems in the details of the devices that lead me to believe it's a fake. Also, for a heavy blow in the center not to cause damage/flattening directly opposite on the rev strikes me as unusual...
I also think not genuine. I'm no expert but I've never seen a chopmark with such a distinct square border. All I recall seeing are just a Chinese character, like the one @derkerlegand posted.
I think so. Look around the square edges of the chop and it appears to me that it was applied over a damage crater in the coin. The edges of the crater can be seen below and to the right of the cop and under it along the top and left edge of the chop. I agree the lack of damage on the reverse is suspicious. and I also see some details of the coin itself that make me doubt its authenticity.
