    Vancouver ='s Canadians, hence hockey...

You have to watch Olympics sports in the wee-hours to see the stuff that prime time events bump out of the way.

That's pretty amazing your father has the Weather Channel on like that... seems like there could be a lot of reasons for that: taking comfort in the constantcy of the reporting similar to how you used to be able to listen to police/EMS scanner calls at home, or missing being an active part of some -- always at the ready when somethings coming, like a storm, or just in fear of calamity. Those Weather Channel people really try to forecast doom and gloom via any twisted thread of weather to keep people tuned in and prevented from leaving their chairs.

PBS is my safe haven from broadcast TV. I'll let ya in on a little secret. I've got "cable" with all the so called "bells and buzzers" like HBO, Showtime, and Starz. The wife and kids like those channels. Me? I could live without 'em. What was the name of that old song? 57 channels and nothin's on? Well it's blossomed to about 150 and there still ain't nothin' on. You mention A&E, History, and Military channels. Quality stuff, and I do at times seek refuge there, but on the night in question I was in the market for a game of college hoops and nothing was on.

That's like saying "Ive never understood why anyone would want to watch PBS"......;)

Oh I expect there will be a LOT of hockey shown this year. . . unfortunately. :)

The past few olympics have been on the other side of the world so their "prime time" events have been going on during our wee-hours, and since I work third shift that is what I get stuck seeing! I'm watching some of the other events, and now they suddenly shift over to four hours of hockey coverage.

Actually I think he does it because he likes to complain about how poor a job they do actually covering the weather. Not accuracy, just a poor job reporting it or actually showing what is going on. (His problem really is that what he wants is the raw data. He has been in the military, and he has had courses in weather forcasting. He can read the maps and information for himself and he doesn't care for the prettied up simplified versions they show briefly on the screen that don't really tell you much about anything. So I keep asking him "If you didlike it so much why do you keep watching it?" No answer.)

Probably very true. But in each case it may say something about the person asking the question...... :)

You folks figured out how to get PBS working again>

I just shifted back to NPR. Trying to save my eyes I guess. Can't see a hockey puck even with the new tech.:p

Well, I too hate what the Weather Channel is now/has become based on what it could have been without ads, marketing and branding. I think ABC News recently had a Nightline story about the spread of The Weather Channel over the past 15 or so years into all major media and cable networks and further into some 18mm US households. They aren't selling the weather as much as the premise of weather that people have learned to tune in to before running out of the house. Once lured in to that regular ritual, the commercials and little logos for brands you see on the top of the local reports for products are hard at work on the consumer within the viewer. The Weather Channel keeps testing the boundaries of what they can do to get more viewers by trying to offer programming related to weather, 'How Weather Changed History", "Storm Stories", etc. They have turned the 'Weather Man' or 'Weather Girl' into a Hurricane uber-brute who can stand in the face of doom and gloom and sell you cold medicine or auto insurance.

Maybe you can turn your father onto NOAA.gov or a really fun one, Wunderground.com, which has really great customizeable radar maps and live tracking over zoom-able Google Maps. Try to ween him off The Weather Channel, because it's making him sick ;) and he needs a return to the purity of raw atmospheric data! It's out there, it's online, where do you think The Weather Channel gets it from? The first link above primarily. :thumb:

That's what I keep telling him, but getting him ON the internet is about as hard as getting him OFF the weather channel.

Funny, funny post!! I just came across it as I'm still here at work and I too am totally passionate about coin collecting. You'll be fine!! I like to think that hobbies like coin collecting are extremely healthy. Being passionate about something is always good, besides it keeps me out of trouble. :D

    No passion, no life!! ;)

Just catching up on this thread.

Green I'm gonna second the thought that it's the collecting gene. Research your family tree so you can find who to blame it on. On the TV schedules, can't say I've watched anything on Network channels since I don't know when. I'd love to see the FCC force al-la-carte pricing on the cable industry. Isn't gonna happen, the lobby is just too strong.

My theory is that collecting keeps us sane........

I don't know I could see it happening, with each channel being charged at a different rate depending on how popular it is, and there being a moderately high "box charge" like the meter charge on your other utilities

I hear what you are saying, I too believe a formula could be constructed that the cable industry can be successful with but that same industry has successfully defended their existing pricing structure in the past. The Commission most likely won't initiate another rulemaking to take up such a controversial issue just because a majority of individuals favor it. They just don't work that way.
