I got an e-mail from biddr this morning about the upcoming Numismatica Genevensis auction. There was a nice Gordian III ADLOCVTIO medallion ...

There was just one little problem ...

With a starting price of 125,000 CHF you might stand a chance of winning the medallion if you sell your home & all your possessions, & auction your family into slavery . I noticed in the same auction they have an example of the famous Naxsos tetradrachm like the one I posted yesterday with a starting price of 25,000 CHF.

The Becker forgery I posted yesterday is a better looking coin :p!

    Is it?

Another doozy currently selling for less than 1/100th of the Gordy 3 (who would spend that much on Gordian III???) is this Judgment of Paris...and it's still too expensive for me:

I noted that the shields carried by the soldiers on the OP coin are rectangular still. They switched to round shields, characteristic of the late empire in the latter 3rd century.

Well, when in doubt, I tend to believe the celator who saw the armies with their own eyes if it was contemporaneous. Kind of like you should trust someone who lived in the 60's versus a millennial historian who reads about the 60's. Maybe the transition started but the square shields were for formal occasions? I love to buy the XXXX Byzantine follis because modern teachers still teach the "rule" that XXXX is not allowed in ROMAN lettering. Sorry, if the ROMANS did it, its "allowed".

"CHF stands for Confoederatio Helvetica franc, where Confoederatio Helvetica is the Latin name for the Swiss Confederation"
