Warning: bad experience this go. Please pile on with better experiences and purchases, or maybe gripes of your own! So I went to a coin show in Tacoma, WA today. Honestly, not a great show, and I didn’t make any purchases. My guess is those focused on US coins would’ve had better luck. Very few vendors, just about 10 or so. Only two really had much in the way of world coins, and none had what I was looking for (which is probably best for my budget). I saw a lot of slabbed US coins, mostly Morgans, Wheat Cents, and Buffalo Nickels. One gentlemen tried to have me look at two raw coins that were supposedly cracked out of slabs and “AU”. One had been wiped and one had a long scratch in it. When I mentioned both issues, the seller claimed they “must have been generous” on the coins. I’m willing to bet that seller tricked a lot of other people that he cracked them out of straight grade slabs because “that’s how most people want them.” My guess is they got details grade. I did get a look at a Lafayette Dollar, marked as AU, but had been polished. Those interest me, but are pricey! I ended up leaving before my allotted time, simply because I ran out of booths to look at. My best experience was talking to a seller for about 15 minutes about coins. I guess I just miss sitting around and talking coins. Glad for the opportunity to do that here.
You're incorrect about one thing..... I think there were only 8 vendors I'm more of a bottom feeder so I was able to find a few things that I already posted about in World Coins.
No coins shows in my area but I did attend a nice family oriented rock, fossil and mineral show today. Bought two banks worth for $160 and talked to a lot of nice people. Glad I have a back up hobby.
The show in Mounteville? We were there as well. My wife and daughter picked up a few things but I came away empty-handed. My problem with minerals and fossils is that they're not coins.
Yes, I spent almost 3 hours there. I left about 12:30. It was a nice show and I had a good time. What I bought was for me to sell in my antique shop. Sorry I missed you. And no, they’re not coins but then coins are not rocks. Lol
I've got the Baltimore Whitman Show coming on 19 Nov. 100+ dealers. I need to sit down and prepare my shopping list.
I bought a coin from a dealer recently who puts on several coin shows around New England. He told me the coin must likely would not come back cleaned. His picture also didn't show hairlines from the wipe. But his picture was also opaque looking. When the coin came it looked harshly cleaned. I took one look and a couple pictures and sent it back that day. He ended up sending it in and ngc did straight grade it as f15. Even the ngc pictures showed the cleaning. I know some stuff is forgiven but this one was ridiculous. He is back on the bay trying to sell it now. If you take his picture and stack it next to the ngc one you can tell ithink the contrast is adjusted. The white is different and in his picture the coin again looks opaque. He is an authorized round table dealer as well. And using camera trickery to make coins look like they aren't.
I'll probably go to Baltimore with a few coin buddies like we've been doing for a long while. Almost two years was our last trip because of covid. Have fun, kanga. Bruce
Yeh, it's been a while for me too. But there's not been a Baltimore show for about 2 years. I've got two more-or-less local shows I haven't been to for about the same period. And at least one more not too far away; not been there either. But I'm lucky there are shows close by. One of the benefits of living in a large metropolitan area.
If somebody tried to convince me to buy a crack out, I'd ask to see the label with it at least so I could look up the number and the picture. Not hard to keep the label with them as I have done it in the past. Yeah, the guy was lying.
I think Baltimore will be a monster of a show. I can't go, but hope some forum members will post reports... Please?
Last time I went to the Baltimore show I spent more time at the B&O museum. But both were worth the trip.
I had planned to go to the Baltimore show, and was excited, since I missed the last 2 ANA shows, due to covid. However, with the Delta variant, I figured better safe than sorry.
It sounds like you didn't get the shots. I've gotten the Moderna shots plus the booster. I feel confident I'm covered.
Wrong, I had the shots & the booster, but I am at high risk. Not worth taking chances. Around here many folks just walk into stores now without masks. I had all shots but still wear a mask.
Oh, the high risk factor. Your caution is understandable. A friend of mine is in the same situation. Double lung transplant.
wow, wish him luck for me. and take care. I don't mind being with people who had their shots, but I still wear a mask. As shown, the Delta variant can still be caught even with the shots. Not worth it, I'll wait until next year. Better to be safe than sorry
All 3 shots but we still wear a mask while out and about. So many people here in Idaho are not wanting to vaccinate or wear masks. We do not want to take chances. No mandate here at all, go figure!
