I came across a list in Facebook that lists supposedly fake sellers on ebay. https://m.facebook.com/fakeancientcoinssellersonebay/ I find it very strange as there are surely many notorious fake sellers but there are listed also well known and reputable sellers, shops and auction houses. I find it frustrating and I also see that many people also have commented against that list on Facebook. Why someone make a list like this?
The guy must have something against Spanish dealers. There at least a couple listed that are on vcoins and not known for selling fakes. As well as many others. Ignore that list.
Savoca Coins is on there? Seriously? I've bought from a couple of other sellers on there (xarioteer, moremoth) that have been great, and I've never seen them sell fakes EDIT: Just saw they have Denant (Den of Antiquity) on there. They must have something against popular UK sellers too...
@Severus Alexander, there's an Ancient Coins Canada logo on there. My guess is that the logos are of companies that sponsor or contribute to the list, but the way the page is laid out, it makes it seem as if these companies are accused of selling fakes. The page definitely needs a re-design.
Thanks for the heads-up! I think the AMCC logo is only showing up in the list of "other pages you might be interested in" generated by the Facebook algorithm. Also, this page seems to be defunct, it hasn't been updated since 2018. Thankfully lots of commenters have already explained quite thoroughly why the list of alleged fakesellers in the pinned post is garbage. Overall, not to worry, I think.
The poor guy just copied the description of this auction https://www.ebay.de/itm/234259993693 It is a known fake and the buyer was robbed of 3.000 Euros
Is the one you posted fake too? Lanz isn't supposed to be a good seller? I know he has in times some fakes here and there but this is extreme. Also how can you tell that it is fake?
He was a serious seller. Doesn't seem to be anymore. There are several fakes that he is selling on eBay - here is another one : https://www.ebay.de/itm/304203218544 beware!
How can you tell it is fake? I am not very good with roman bronzes. He states also that it is tooled and somoothened.
at least it is heavily tooled - look at the hair and the fold on the front neck. Tried to look again at the coin, but the sale ended, sold for EUR 413. Search "Trajan AND Sestertius AND Felicitas AND Caduceus" and compare to others of this type on coinarchives.com
But he states that it is tooled sooooo he is kinda finding his way around it. I think that Lanz lost all his reputation that used to have. I think though that it's not the original Dr Lanz that has the company any more, someone else is now behind these auctions. It is now full of heavily tooled, destroyed or fake coins that they sell. Coins that no one in his right mind would like to buy.
This object (I dare not call it a coin) was made by using transfer dies. Easy to spot once you know how and where to look. In this case I will refer to a post by member @Amentina in the German forum (=@Din X in FAC) https://tinyurl.com/chp8fuj6 It haunts ebay and other locations for some time now. By the way - Lanz sold hundreds of fake Marc Antony legionary denarii via ebay for hundreds of Euro each this and last year They literally contaminated the market - beginning to reappear now. Hermann Lanz founded the company, died in 1998, collected Eastern Celtic Coins Dr. Hubert Lanz owns the company now
I followed this a bit a few years. The seller created that list to discourage potential customers from purchasing from his competitors at the time. The initial list was primarily suspect sellers, but over time legitimate dealers were added as buyers got second opinions on purchases made from him. He had a tirade against NGC at one point when they refused to slab some of his coins. You can safely ignore that list.
