With continuing inflation, it won’t be long until the cent coin has more than one cent worth of zinc in it. Once that happens, it’s game over for the cent coin unless the mint starts using plastic for it. Doesn’t matter if it’s illegal to melt U.S. coins. It will happen anyway just like it did with silver coins in the early 60’s. Cal
I think that all purchases, deposits, or any other transaction should be done with a Credit/Debit card, then we won't need coins or currency ever again. Our Social Security and Retirement is directly deposited in our account. Every since this has happened, all of our purchases have been with our VISA. I love it because I can see all the deposits and payments are on my account with the bank almost instantaneously. My wife teases me that I can see all of her purchases before she can get home and tell me. It took her a while to get gas with her CC. People on welfare and food stamps already have it deposited into their accounts. When I am behind a person at the grocery store paying with her "Food Stamp" card, they can get just about anything they want, except cigarettes and alcohol. There may be something else. I think it would be better for them to have a VISA card so nosey people like me don't know that they are on welfare. I remember reading a few sci-fi books about payments made with "Credits".
Could be the whole damn thing already ended in a nearby supernova but the shockwave just hasn't arrived yet.
Here’s the first thing I saw on the Internet: The U.S. Mint will officially phase out penny production in late 2022, and it'll complete its last batch of penny production on April 1, 2023. ... Mint won't let the penny fizzle, though. Instead, it'll send off the coin with 50,000 proof sets that it'll auction off to collectors.Jul 1, 2021. Here’s two articles about this: https://www.newswire.com/news/what-will-happen-when-the-u-s-stops-making-pennies-in-2023-21409166 https://www.meettally.com/blog/news-penny-production-will-stop-in-2023-heres-why But I can’t find any announcements from the US Mint. Go figure. Maybe they are behind in news announcements. Maybe the mint is trying to concentrate on quality control. There is also another article about the massive changes coming to all of us in US coinage.
Look at the date for the last penny production! Aside from the lame and outdated joke, the U.S. Mint would be foolish to discontinue the Lincoln cent entirely. Best scenario would be for them to continue to strike enhanced uncirculated and proof Lincolns, but change the composition to pre 1982 metals. They could charge a price that would ensure profit for them, and better quality cents for us collectors; as well as keep Abraham Lincoln for posterity. No striking of circulating cents.
Yep, I don't know if the people publishing those stories are pulling a prank or if they have been pranked. An April 1st ending date? Also in the first story they say the Mint made the announcement in "early April". But all the Mint press releases are available on the Mint website and there is no such announcement in March, April, or May. The two stories are similar enough that they have taken the information from a common source. I'd say they were pranked. Well the government has had "no brains" for 14 years now. What, AGAIN?
They've spent ten years trying to find a material to let them do that. They did actually find one. It would have allowed the five cent piece to be made at a cost of only 4.9 cents apiece. But metal prices have increased since then.
