Let's see how good the penny forum experts are in thier estimates of the PCGS graders... let's hear it penny pro's ! the second one is my favorit toner in the collection. Pretty sure it would crack Todd's camera lens,, and maybe even blind a few forum members if he were get his hands on it and then post the pics here... I have never seen another like it,, some close, but this one is as blue as blue can get, with strong blasts of dang near every other color in the rainbow in there at various angles and under different light. Thought about going to NGC just to give it a star on the holder,, I think I could miss... huh,, which give me another thread idea...... anyway,, back to topic ! Penny pro's !,, what will PCGS grade these ?
I want to preface my comments by saying I'm no Lincoln expert. If anything, my knowledge in this series is particularly weak. The 1909-S VDB would grade F-12, but I have my doubts as to its authenticity. The mintmark looks funny. The 1913 might grade low MS (61/62), but I don't like the color. It may have been cleaned and recolored. Not knocking your coins -- just saying what my eyes see.
if you looks as if his nose is too round and it seems like his lips are "full". That could be normal for a penny of that age. I have a 69 penny in my hand and comparing the features. If it's real, then you are one lucky man.
I have my doubts PCGS would grade either of them. Something funny with the '09 - look at the hair. And I believe the '13 is damaged - part of the rim/edge is missing.
That 09-S VDB should go 15 - if they would grade it. I am not sure just what is going on in Abe's hair, but Doug may be right that it will not grade. On the 1913-, I think that the rim is all there. That is just glare on the photo. If it grades, I would say 64 BN. However, I doubt that it would grade. If those are scratches on the back I know it won't grade and I think there is a good possibility it would come back altered surfaces
I don't want to come off as a jerk but I think your coins would photo more accurately if you removed them from the 2X2's.
I believe both coins will grade with no problem. The 09 seems to be a solid F-15 could get a F-18, the 13 should easily get a 64, but a RB designation could be on the slim side. Maybe a BROWN-red...
I do not know enough to say if the 09 is genuine, but my grade is F-15 also. Not quite good enough for VF20. And the 13 is 63 bn - assuming those creases or whatever on the reverse are from the 2x2. PS - Doug I think the glare is hiding the rim.
Yes,, the rim is complete, it's the first thing I look at when viewing any coin and I would not submit one with damaged or incomplete rims. The scratches on the reverse are on the 2x2. Yes, I agree, they would photo better out of the 2x2 but I avoid removing any of my coins from thier protective shell at all costs.. taking pics of them did not warrent the handling imo. I just imparted too may finger prints and other lil' ding's on coins trying to surgically handle them with cotton gloves,,, something always seems to happen.. probably the beer ; ) The 13 is an honest beaut imo, but I enjoy the feedback, and if you nail it as altered, then you get bonus points, because I certainly could not under 10x.... Good comments all, feel free to agument your estimation at any point.. the last recorded answer counts. Again, try to post one answer for each, a final answer, we can clearly grade all submissions in two weeks or so. I'll provide the full ranking over the 4 posted coins in the forum. Still some pro's out there who haven't chimed in yet......
Why do Bahabully and Chasindreams have a similar writing style? I am very disturbed by the similar use of excess commas and other punctuation marks. Are either of you native speakers of English? I enjoy the coins posted by you, but am distracted by the eclectic writing style. Hmmmm.....
I'm going say the first one is a solid F-12. The second one... MS-63 (assuming they don't get scared off by the color).
We talk slower in the south.....excessive punctuation provides for that southern draw.... No, I am not a native speaker of English,,,, but I speak rebel very well.
As it is PCGS we are talking about I will say the 09 is a VF-20 and the 13 is a MS-64 RB if it has about 10% red in it, but I like you baha have a coin that is a spectacular natural shade of blue that I just can't get the photos right on.
That is very similar to the look of the 13 in hand. I use my wifes big as& diffused lighting she purchased to go along with the $1,500 camera I got her for xmas a few years ago... I use that camera too (a cannon something or other, 14 or 16 mega pixel). Anyway, the lighting is the same that you see if you go get your portrate taken, a stand with a big light and a white umbrella diffuser... I put the coin on a chair and poing the umbrella down at it and bring it down to around 1-2" away from the coin,, I think it really works well for ensuring all details come out in a coin, but I think the immense flood of diffused light actually cuts through alot of the tone on coppers. For silvers this process does not work at all, you just wind up with a white dot... I have to back the light off to around 4-6" feet depending on luster of the coin. Still, diffused light is the best light to date that I've used to get any resolution on tone in my coins,, although I am now wondering if metal-hyl would be even better at showing both tone and luster... That 09 is pretty, I'd live to put a set of these deep blues together.
pcgs has returned these... results are in.. bumpting to give any last minute folks an opportunity to check in.......... penny lady,,, penny guy.. mike,,,, your absence is noted as you all are preceived pro's in tis arena.. what say thee ? compiled results in the near future,, as they say, keep quite and appear ignorent, or speak up and prove your ignorance ; )
