No - it is local because it is not national or international news. But little local reports like this happen every week, everywhere. Coin thefts are not just common, but they are under reported. Look at the reistence in this group for an example of what people face when they're coins are stolen and resold on the market. I think it is a fair example of the bad face the industry has. At some point, fellow collectors will stop being viewed as nothing more than marks.

Short and sweet. Take responsibility. Don't try to pass that off to someone else.

Long and short, that is not how the world works, at least not since the middle ages. This is just a working class family working a coin business and they suffered a fairly decent hit that likely cost them very personally. It could have happened to any dealer on this board or in the business. The first step to curbing these threats is first and formost having some sympathy for the victems.

If I get 'jacked' then I'm to blame for not taking the necessary precautions to protect what's mine. Your 'middle ages' comment just exemplifies your predilection to have someone/s take care of you, and for you to blame if something goes amiss.

Your desire to be protected is very clear and understood. It's actually not very difficult. Just hire a body guard. You'd rather blame it on the police as if you have a right to have one on standby to watch out for your wellbeing. It doesn't work that way. Unless of course you want your NYC taxes to reflect the personal body guard service you crave. It would be much less expensive to just pay for one body guard for each of you and your family than to have to pay for everyone else's that understands their own protection is their own responsibility.

umm no. There is no reason to keep saying this because it is OBVIOUSLY wrong every time you needlessly repeat it. We live by rule of law. This is not an opinion. It is a fact. This is established for millennium.

We have government, police, and laws. You can try to protect yourself if you want, and it is rational to do so, but that doesn't decriminalize larceny or make the trade in stolen coins justifiable. It is a moral failure to blame the victim of crime for the criminal act.

Short and sweet, don't justify crime. The people that were robbed in this article were wronged. It is a crime against society and the victims are blameless.

Please go back through every one of my posts and show me when and where I've ever said that larceny or the trade in stolen coins is justifiable. Don't put words in my mouth.

Just because I firmly believe it's every person's responsibility to exercise due caution and take all preventative measures to secure their personal safety does not translate into barbarianism or wild west truly rule of law. The two aren't mutually exclusive.

You on the other hand believe it's prudent to turn the key to lock your apartment door and expect that should be enough because, "We have government, police, and laws.".

We differ on the fundamental aspects of freedom.
