Good afternoon all I wanted some help with this dime as it’s slightly thicker than a standard dime and has no reeded edge ( does not appear to be wear on the edge ) the weight is correct for the type of coin it is so has this coin just missed the reeding part of the process? If it had been ground down wouldn’t that make it weigh less than it should? As always any help is much appreciated Dime missing reeded edge by Darren Edwards posted Oct 29, 2021 at 1:12 PM Dime missing reeded edge by Darren Edwards posted Oct 29, 2021 at 1:12 PM Dime missing reeded edge by Darren Edwards posted Oct 29, 2021 at 1:12 PM Dime missing reeded edge by Darren Edwards posted Oct 29, 2021 at 1:12 PM
With the rim intact (not raised), I'd say it is not spooned, but have no explanation for it looking like it does. I see the faintest sign of reeding, but the smooth, polished edge doesn't look ground down or mechanically altered. What is the diameter? Maybe others can explain it, like: @Fred Weinberg, or @JCro57, others.
I think it is neither a "spooned" coin or a "dryer" coin. If it had been spooned, I would think that the edge would be slightly rounded instead of completely flat. Note that you can also see some partial reeds along the rim. If it had been a dryer coin, I would expect to see some amount of mushiness of the devices from the heat. I can only speculate as to the cause, but it definitely does not look like spooning or a dryer.
I found one like that, with edges sharp I assumed it was dryer damage I doubt I saved it but now I’ll have to go search a couple rolls of odd dimes
After doing some research and comparing to other coin examples online I’m going with dryer coin. Thanks for all the replies, hopefully the next coin I post will be something worth posting lol
Then at this point I have no idea lol. I will just throw it with my other oddities and maybe one day I will figure it out
