What sorts of coins interest you? That would be the best place to start, I imagine. I personally search dimes, sometimes halves, and rarely cents, but to each his own.
i was thinking presidential, sacagawea or kennedy halfs? i like them all. but with has the most potential value?
i've decided im not going to the bank. im just going to search ebay and ask the forum if its good or not.
If you are talking about rolls from ebay, those tend to be shady at best; if you are looking for single coins, look for them slabbed (and only by the top tier TPGs) because anything else is a bit, shall we say, uncertain.
It is hard to answer your questions without more specifics. But here is a synopsis: quickest bang for your buck is buying half dollar rolls from bank as you can find silver, 90% and 40%, depending upon year. There are many dry rolls though. Best way to find old coins may be nickels. I usually find one from the 50s or older in every 2 rolls I search. Most fun would be cents as you can search for a lot of errors, and get a lot of bang for your buck.
Cents is what I have started with ,Best thing about it is you dont tie up much money in a box and you can take your time looking for errors an so on .
