So yesterday at my local coin shop I saw that they picked up a collection of nearly all of the large cents. My attention was drawn towards the draped busts. I have always wanted one and choosing one when they have 7 to choose from was harder than I thought. My eye kept going to this 1803. My second choice is a 1798 with a huge cud/die crack running along the top of the reverse. My question is, what variety did I find? There are several this year and I’m completely over my head with early coppers. Thank you
It's the small date, small fraction Variety : 1803 Draped Bust Large Cent Small Date - Small Fraction Early Copper Penny Coin Value Prices, Photos & Info (usacoinbook.com) How much did you pay by chance if you don't mind me asking ?
Give me a little bit.The are 24 varieties to check. But I see no CUD. S-256 R2 - This variety does develop a CUD over STA in the late die states, but I see no evidence of this in the photos.
I have a feeling that I should have gone for the 1798. There was also a 1807/6 in similar shape to the 1803
2 easy tells for the 1807/6 small 7 in low grade: 1. The 1 is jammed up against the hair 2. The top of the 7 touches the bust If you see both of these characteristics, even if the overdate isn’t visible, it is the rare variety
