I think you will be hard pressed to buy 5-6 1996 mint sets (with W dime) for $60. With a budget like that, I'd say more like 3-4 sets.
Maybe if you're trying to buy off of eBay. But greysheet bid on the set is $12... many dealers at shows are thrilled to sell mint sets at Greysheet bid and several are happy to sell at less. Sure, some will try to get $20 per set, but they are available at lower prices if you're willing to hunt. In the past year or so I've bought maybe 30-35 sets in the $10-$13 range. Guess I have a little hoard of them now... :thumb:
I just received my 1996 W Rossevelt in the mail, Its a raw coin, in the original package. I purchased it for $15 with free shipping. It looks like full torch bands to me. The pic is not too good sorry, Im still trying to get the hang of the photo part of this hobby. I felt I did good on this purchase. What do you guys think?
I think that this is a very smart idea on your part. IMO, this coin is undervalued and your method is an inexpensive way to accumulate them. TC
Don't matter a hoot what I think Onetime1969. Just matters what you think. You're happy with your purchase and that's all that matters. For what it's worth though? Nice.....
I believe that the whole series will pickup one day and when it does the '96W will be a big demand item. I've had a goal of putting away one nice example a month and have only missed two months this past year.
Hmmm, I just can't get into the hype that a 68 is soooo much better than a 67. It's such a miniscule difference.
I would like one but I don't want one certified (don't care about grade). I don't really consider it part of the set...as it wasn't released for circulation...but I would still like to have it as a little bonus for the set. When I say that I have found all but three of the Clad dimes in circulation in the past year, I am not counting this one. Even though I don't have it, I don't have it on my set-missing list either. Other people may not view it that way, but I do...and since it's my set... While I have not been to West Point itself I have seen it many times in person from the park at Cold Spring across the Hudson River...my mom's best friend's husband works there...yet I don't have a single W mint mark in my collection. Weird, huh?
These will ALL be saved in various stages of MS, and a true circulated example may be a rare bird. Seems they were almost thrown in as a 'last thought'. This coin grading at MS66 or lower, from the mint packaging, will be akin to an ASE grading at MS67. Where they were specially made, none should grade lower than a 67. Though, Roosies are not an easy coin to get a great strike, due to it's small size, hence there being an overabundance without FB...unlike the '94 & '97 Jeffs, which ALL should have FS. THIS is how the Mint SHOULD have dealt with the '96-W Roosie. They should have been made with care, and part of a set, or at least a special offering, much like the '99 Proof SBA (which was simply sold on it's own, not being in the proof set, but time constraints had a hand in that also), and not just 'tossed in' with the mint set as an after thought, as that is the way they were treated. It SHOULD be a bigger 'standout' coin in the Roosie series, much like the '94 and '97 Jeffs. A NON FS Jeff from those years is the small exception to the rule, yet alot of '96-W Roosies seem to not have FB. Non-FB examples are rampant. I'm not a Roosie collector (though I do have a couple sets with this coin still in cello, as well as an MS66FB example). FB examples should be sought out, but I've seen fewer listings. But again, I haven't actively sought this coin out once I got my 66FB example, though that could be partly due to my only seeking out a 67FB example. IF a 67FB should come around, I'm in the fray!
