I fly quite often and the gate check scenario happens frequently. I would never leave coins in a bag that wouldn’t fit under the seat. The only other safe option would be to pay for priority boarding which would guarantee space in the overhead bin. Even that wouldn’t have helped on the commuter aircraft I was on last week that was too small for roller bags.

    The airline should be responsible.

    But, they'll probably never pay

As usual with these type of stories the coins are never identified.

Ok, read the story. Don't know if they x-ray those last-minute, gate-checked bags, or maybe it was the weight (although couldn't have been too much for a 78-y-o lady) that alerted the employee-thief. Too bad...hopefully it was caught on a cam somewhere/somehow.

Right after 9-11, I was flying to Florida as a dealer to sell coins at the FUN Show. I had my inventory in a carry-on. When I had it X-rayed, the person at the screen starting yelling, "He's got coins! He's got coins!"

I felt like kicking her in the butt. One of the main defenses you have when you are traveling with valuable inventory is to be as quiet about it as possible. They took me out of line, and I demanded a private search, which I knew was my right.

I got to Florida okay, but that was not a fun experience. The show was FUN, but the getting down there wasn't.

Did you have the coins inventoried? If you do you have a solid case against the airline. I once lost my service weapon in a check in bag. When I showed my credentials my bag suddenly showed up, in tact. A sign of the time, missing luggage happens more often than you might think, go figure!

It seems like they X-ray almost all of those bags, and when they do, it's easy enough to know what's in them. When they see something that looks like it's valuable, that's when the bag gets "lost." Since you can't even lock the bag, it's easy enough go in an see what's there.

If it's nothing, they can re-seal it. If it's good ... OOPS! We're sorry; we can't find it.

Actually, as a former airport screener, I can tell you what should be happening.

Carry on bags go through the X-Ray. When coins are detected, the bag is checked with the passenger watching. If requested, a private search can be done with the passenger close by watching the search. Once cleared, the bag is returned to the passenger and that's it.

As I said, this is the way it should be done. That's the way we did it in Kansas City.

It used to be you could request a private search ahead of time so you wouldn't have to risk a loose lipped X-ray person.

And I would have gotten their name and filed a report of them being a security risk.

Lost, stolen, misplaced. Prior to an investigation it is best to use non accusatory type language, hence, missing. If it is determined that a crime occurred the case is turned over to airport and local police authority for further action. From this point forward it is a matter of facts, facts, and only facts! Thanks for your response cplradar. Be safe.

    I didn't. Don't flatter yourself.

But trying to avoid them is like dodging dog excrement in the park that dog owners are too arrogant to pick up.

The frequency of these is nauseating.
