1928-S Silver Peace w/error is it worth investing in?

Hey yall, I have two more coins to ask about. I have not purchased these yet and I am not for sure they are worth my time. So please share your expertise with me. As always THANKS! The first coin is a keydate 1928-s silver peace dollar. I have attached all the pic's I have of it. There is an error on it. I don't know if that helps the value or not. The second one is a 1898-p morgan with error as well.

In your post you said 1898, but I gather you meant 1889 by the photograph. I can't tell which VAM it is from the photo. Are you sure it is VAM 39 as shown as there are a slew of them. See at here.

Both coins aren't technically errors, they're varieties. Varieties for both Morgan and Peace dollars are called VAMs, you can find info on them at VAMworld ( VAMworld - home ).

The '28-S Peace dollar is relatively common in circulated condition, and only bring big money in the higher uncirculated grades. The '89 P Morgan vam 39 isn't that desirable. Personally I wouldn't buy either coin, unless you could get them for around $20 each.

 

What's that '28 holdered in? Lot o' wear. Raider knows what he's talking about.....

 

I am not sure. I just posted the pic's that were sent to me. The writing was already on the pic's so I am unsure about the VAM... I don't even know what that stands for

 

They look like the generic slabs anyone can buy to slab their coins. I also agree with Jim, from the pics you really can't tell exactly what VAM it is, so you would have to hope the seller attributed it correctly, which can be tricky with all the '89 doubled ear varieties.

 

WOW! Thank you SO much! I am truly thankful that you all are so honest! I was told that the morgan could be worth a possible $150K (10x the max amount of $15K) and the Pace a possible $600K (10x the max amount of $60K) I am glad I won't be the sucker to purchase them.

Jumping into the hard stuff the first day of class huh

VAM stands for Van Allen and Mallis who wrote a book on Morgan and Peace dollars called "The Comprehensive Catalogue and Encyclopedia of U.S. Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars" where they had a lot of time and a lot of silver dollars on their hands evidently, so they catalogued each Dollar by the Date/Mint ( as all collectors do) and then by a number ( VAM number) based on what combination of dies for that year struck the front and back of each coin. So every Morgan and every Peace dollar has a VAM number, even the most common. SO many people don't care what their dollar's VAM number happens to be, and the value doesn't care much unless they are popular for certain VAM collectors, and then there might be a good pop in value.

Now, the premier VAM site is Vamworld.com, and they try to maintain a complete list, many with photos, and a nice interface to find your particular dollar.

If you go to www.vamworld.com, on the left side there is a "Top 100", Hot 50, Hit 40" lists. If yours isn't on the top 100, probably no reward. The Hit 40 usually gets the highest increase. How much??? Hard to tell as it is supply and demand.

There are 3 doubled ear VAMS, 16,18,20 for 1889P on the Hot 50, and a VAM 28A on the Hit 40. None for the 1928S.

Thank you! And yes this information is very helpful. I think this will be something I find worthwhile during my spare time and something I would like to share with my son so that one day he can continue what I am attempting to start

 

THe 28-S is only a semi-key in higher grades. In the grade shown it wouldn't be worth much more than melt. As mention above in the 20 dollar range.

 

I agree... if you see/hear it on CT, you can probably believe about 2/3 of it.
