Hi guys, I have this 1989 Lincoln Memorial Penny and noticed a large die chip on the Reverse covering the "F" in FG along with a die crack next to it. I also see cracks along the rims of the penny on both obverse and reverse. Are these cracks along the rim due to a worn die?
That’s one of the most common places for a crack to develop on this type of coin. Congrats on the find.
Agree with above. The ring is evidence of a deterioration, the die cracks and the die chip is evidence of a failing die…so not as extreme as a shattered die but well on it’s way…Spark
Look at Cuds on U.S. Coins : Cuds on Coins (cuds-on-coins.com) The 1989 had many examples. This may be a pre-cud.
Yes, these dies were ready to give out. Besides the chip and crack, see all the wrinkling? It means they took a lot of punches.
Good example to keep for comparing to others. I haven't seen such an obvious example, but then I ignore cents, especially after 1982.
