Hey all! I recently received this 1833 capped bust half Dime in the mail today, have no been able to take any pictures of my own so using the sellers. Mine is the one with the interesting toning or mark of some sort on the reverse. I picked this one up for around 125$ I believe which seemed like a decent price for its grade and comparing it to other ones sold. The other one I found this morning just randomly scrolling had sold for a whopping 1,180$! I can’t believe it because it’s grade I would give it and even if it was a rare variety it would be hard for me to believe. It also had close to 40 bids which is fairly high. I’m assuming some eagle eye collectors knew what variety it was and jumped on it ASAP because minutes before it ended it was at 167$. Is anyone familiar with the variety or even the possible reason this happened? The pictures with the date stamp is mine I can also upload my pictures later as I use a macro lens that helps significantly imo. Best regards as always, Travis
The first one is an LM-4, R-2, pretty common. At first I thought it might be the LM-6 which is an R-6, quite rare but it's not. A $125 cost might be very nice for this coin although with better pictures it might show up as cleaned. I assume it is raw. The second one is the LM-3, and R-2. At first, I thought it might be the LM-6 which is a R-7 but closer inspection says not. I don't see what people bidding this coin up are seeing.
Yes it is raw, I haven’t had enough time to get a closer look at it with a loupe but I will post pictures here in a bit when I have a chance. I’m not sure either but also I don’t know the varieties all I could find were the LM and what number but could not find a place that described each one. I checked the bid history and the final 4 bids were from all different people jumping it 289$, 888$, 1155$ then the last person got it for 1180$. It all happened within the last few seconds also. I messaged the seller out of curiosity but they have not replied. I don’t think they know though because they had nothing listed on it besides 1833 half Dime.
Could it possib Could it possibly be the LM-2 or the LM-5? Looks like those are the other two rare ones. From what they sold for the LM-5 looks to be the most rare variety?
Pubilus2 is 100 % correct on the attribution of an LM 4 obv 2 rev U the doubled repunched O in the word OF. The #6 * star has been recut and you can see it quite clearly. If you notice you will see that when doing the attribution that there are other die marriages connected . Meaning either the obv. Or rev. Dies were also paired with other obv. Or rev dies. At time when there are remarriages there maybe be very close but one must follow all the pups and descriptions . And yes some remarrages are extremely rare to find, making them higher R values. This is the 1833 specimen in the first image posted. The specimen does look to have been cleaned. Yes details however that isnt as bad as it may sound. These little coins were housed in albums that toned them extremely dark even black! That said And as a haldf dime collector I can assure you 90 % of raw coins have been cleaned.

The next image is an 1833 LM 5 obv. 2 rev.P pups the filled s where the s in states is located the end of scroll at the T base in united. This is an R 7+ marriage this is why its being bid as high as you noticed.
I hope this clears up any questions that you may have feel free to pm me any questions, or ask here as I will watch this thread.
Very in depth and great explanation thank you! It’s amazing how many small details there are that people pick up to classify as new varieties, if I didn’t know what to look for I’d just think they were all the same LOL. It does look like it’s had some cleaning done to it I’ll have some more clear pictures of it uploaded on this post in about 1-2 hours! I’ll go ahead and bookmark that link for future reference, thank you!
From what I saw that is the more rare variety of this year? Wow I thought these guys were absolutely crazy I wish I bid on it because I still think they got a good deal by a few hundred! I guess it really does help when you know the varieties.
You are very welcome, please know that I am available to help anytime, Im not an expert, but always willing to try and explain and share any knowledge that may help. Google is your friend ...as well members here to give you web sites that will give you a start to finding the answers.
I sometimes see bidding as such....that makes me go dig to find out why. Another case e bay an item with 27 watchers....trigers a light bulb in my head that sez why? Then I play detective and try and figure out why. Lastly there no dumb questions....if you want to learn all there is involved in collecting coins.
Thank you again! I love picking the brains of people that have been collecting for some time or even knowledgeable in just certain types of coins. I only started about 3 years ago so am still fairly new but it never is short of amazing and interesting at that. I know there are also a lot of books out there just some of them can be fairly spendy. I will go ahead and give you a follow! I do the same thing but eBay the app on my phone which what I use doesn’t show how many watchers I did not know you could see that I’m assuming only on the website? I may have to get the old laptop out. Also I will add the pictures I just took of the 1833 h10 it’s a lot darker then the gentlemen’s pictures and I don’t believe it to be cleaned? Just some neat toning dark and colorful.
I'm going to attribute this specimen and explain while doing so you can try and follow using the sight above. I try and read the coin first....I allow my eyes to look for "pups" = pick up points! Since I collect the series I am acustom to first look for large details that jump out...then narrow it down by the smaller ones. This 33 has a huge clash in front of the face. Date position, stars position and repunched or re cut., on the reverse, S to s position S in states S in EPU how they match up. The scroll position, the 5 C . It position, and the arrows their position in reference to the last A in America. Next I go to the site I gave you...and begin putting together the points first the obv. Then the rev. Go have a look at the sight now>>> For the 33 there are 3 obv.s I look at all 3 for the most possible match. Looks like obv. #2 as yup theres the clash in front of her face. Date yup the 83 is very close which of the choices fit? Yes it is the second obv. As the above match up perfectly, but they match All 3? Yes of course as all 3 are the second obv die. Next the rev. Plenty of major pups to id which reverse is the correct marriage? Using the pups I listed above for the reverse pups I now start to id all those pups. Now I am going to first look at the arrows heads looking at all 4 possible reverse dies The arrows touch th A in America. Next the 5 C . Does the 5 match is its flag long or short? Then narrowing it down point by point matching one can see that this specimen is an Obv,2 ~ rev. U ~LM~ 4 now go to the chart and find the R factor well theres several from an R 2 to an R 5. Now the fun part...die remarriages-! This is where you begin to refine all the points....and when everything alines bingo your answer. I am going to warn you!!! H ~10's are habit forming! I currently have two double slab boxes 12 inches long double rows of half dimes...im guessing from 1828-1872 somewhere in the neighborhood of 275 to 300 last count. There's a few members here Nathan is one who caught the h 10 bug from me....John Call A well known member and dealer ,well we quite offten do business as he knows the series Sells well....especially to me lol. Once you play with doing attributions they get easier, but mistakes can be made so again recheck your pups. I hope this post helps you discover a series thats so fun to collect. Its also a series thats over looked by many,,, no problem more H~10s for me. LoL
Hete are 2 1833 h 10s of mine. Travis i will also share this with you. There are dealers here on the forum. I highly recommend Mike @ Toughtcoins who is also a mod. And C-B-D John Call Both Mike & John have the knowledge in the hobby, and will work with you. Both have good inventories, and both very well respected by the membership.
@Paddy54, I also use that website in conjunction with the much older LM book. I make the OP's LM-4 to be the LM-4.1 die remarriage although it could be the early lapped state of 4.2. Interestingly, LM indicates all three remarriages to be R-2 but the website shows the 4.3 to be an R-5. The website is much newer information so has the 4.3 rarity been uprated in actuality? Also the website says the re-punched O is a diagnostic of 4.3 when LM says it is actually diagnostic of all three uses of Reverse U. Nice writeup of the process!
Thanks Publius2 sort of give a man a fish or teach him to ....fish. Plus the site is really nicely done. I have probably 50 /60 +/- of cap bust half dimes the prices have gone up so much even for the lower grades. I probably <15 seated needed to complete my set down to the very rare ones. I do have a date set on cap bust...working on variety and die marriages. I dont see that happening unless I hit the lottery. lol I do feel giving a new collector the right tools their interest grows in the hobby...than to loose interest . I am trying to land a out of print text on h 10's as it up on auction I dont want any competition ya know lol.
WOW…! Honestly I had no idea there was so much depth into these little H-10s! You definitely painted me a picture though as I went through the whole thing step by step. I can see how this would be addicting, it changes the game from just collecting to almost adding a game like feature to the whole thing. I will have to check out some LM books on eBay or Amazon to learn a bit more. I think that bug is beginning to spread to another member LOL. This is my only half Dime I own at the moment, I only bought this one for my eBay store but I think I may start collecting these for my next project after I am done with my Barber quarters. I’ve always seen the list of LMs for each year and mint but never understood them. I am glad you made it to this post, you and @Publius2! You guys are awesome thanks again!
I can agree with that because I’ve been collecting only for 3 years but I will go through dry patches where I’ll set the hobby aside and pick it back up a few months later, this is definitely a game changer for my next project!
Well I am sure that Publis2 and I are very happy to share with you this part of the hobby. Nathan from RI. Got so involve ,and excited he had 2 t shirts made 1 for me and himself. It has "Got Half Dime" on the front with a 1837 h 10 obv. On the front of the shirt, and the rev. Of the h 10 , On the back of the shirt. I should image it and post....as he gave it to me for a xmas gift.
