Nice avatar designs, @Deacon Ray. It is not easy to fit something special (yet recognizable) within the small avatar space. I prefer closeup of my ancient coins.
Although not featuring any ancient coin, mine is an obvious testimony of the historical and indefectible brotherhood between France and USA. Plus, the coin in question is a gold Proof 100 francs of mine (yes I confess having some modern coins aswell, sorry ) Q
My avatar is of my old coin-assistant Oswald. He’d see me coining and come lay as close as he could (usually on top of my things as in my avatar) and keep watch. He passed away in 2018 and was a true house-panther. I keep it because I miss him and… it’s just kinda my visual identifier. Oswald’s bother Charlie is still around and “assisting” but, we have some differences and a less friendly relationship.
I had pics of some of my favorite coins as avatars on CT. Will probably change it when I feel the need For the moment I am using this Gordian reverse with clasping hands - I like this reverse type and I like this coin in particular. I finally managed to photo the coin itself now as I neglected to do this. It was quite a surprise I managed to get it. Not bad quality overall and not a very common coin. In the live auction the price was lower than I expected so I hit bid. Still low. Won it.
I prefer selfie avatars that show the person or at least something that identifies their character so we can imagine we are meeting face to face. I have been using the one here for several years. It was taken with the camera resting on the background and shooting up. It was cropped from a larger image but the coin, camera and I are all one shot. When I first got my new camera with the built in focus stacking routine, I shot another selfie but did not see it as an improvement in any way so the old one remains. Now I can't find it in my disorganized state. I know I look better with a mask but you must suffer as it is.
Forgiven! ...let he that is without sin...cast the first stone... I too am guilty of straying from ancients occasionally.
Someone said inertia; I like that answer. I have left my avatar unchanged for some time, as I remain stuck on South Asian coins. Now that I have been reminded, I will now think about coming up with some other avatar. Old Doonesbury is a right neat looking dude. Actually, his name is Vijayasena, c. AD238-250, Western Satraps.
