Though i enjoy the show, I dont like the way the customer gets ripped off
Especially the pawner, 30 to 50 Cents on the dollar is a big rip!

Well I'm sure those are sanitized for TV as well. :D

I've heard them ask ppl if they wanted a loan but I have never seen the show when they are giving ppl loans. Loans are a huge part of the business and see customers at their most desperate point. I don't think loans would make for good TV. Maybe I'll watch it again, but the couple of shows I've watched are very unreal like in their context. Pawn shops are the underbelly of the seedy and the TV show depicts smiles and joking. Pawning is serious business, for certain. :secret:

meh. they have big money. take an example like my state wisconsin. theres so much old furniture and other junk you could get for $100 or less at auction - ship down to las vegas and still make money because everyone around here is cheap. unless you know what its really worth dont expect to get it. if i wasnt so far away theres a couple things id take there myself just because i got them dirt cheap in the first place.

I think the whole key is knowing what you are doing. I would also be interested in seeing what goes on without the cameras - do they still call in the experts? Some of the items they show they don't make a whole lot of money off of and I wished they showed what they sold that balloon for - if they sold it. I enjoy the show just to see some of the things people bring in.

I sold the signs to my brother and collectors but here are some examples of the same signs I had either found or bought.

So let's predict... post here: what do you think they will offer, and what would YOU offer if you ran the store?

What grade is the coin and what does it look like? Kind of makes a difference on my guess.

I love the show Pawn Stars. It's great to see all the stuff that comes in, and sure some of the set ups are staged for the camera. Just like other shows of this type, they only show the interesting segments to the viewers. I'm sure there are hours upon hours of unused footage that just isn't interesting. Funny thing is, I'm usually yelling at the customers since they always want what the item is worth. You never get what the item is worth at a pawn shop. Its as if these people don't understand that the store needs to make money and pay for over head. If you want close to what it's worth, go auction. You want fast cash, go pawn.

I love the show too and I am going to Vegas in April to see my sister who lives there and plan to visit the shop. Since I am a true collector I won't be taking in any of my coins to pawn or sell but I am interested in seeing what Rick and company have in their cases. As for loans - during one episode that I saw a guy got a lawn for his Volvo semi. So yes they do air the loans.

    NO WAY, ARE YOU CRAZY!!!

For fast cash list it on Ebay with a low "buy it now". You will get WAY more than a pawn shop and you will have the cash in your Paypal account in less than 3 minutes. I know I've done it.
Pawning things is for idiots with an IQ below 50.

Actually, the guy describes how the process works almost every episode. The loans are the pawns. He says people can either sell the item to the shop outright and walk away, or pawn it. If the customer pawns it, they are paid for the item but the shop is not allowed to sell the item for 60 days. The item is collateral for the money/loan the customer is given. The customer then has the option to come back and buy their item back, plus interest. If they don't come back for it in time, it becomes the property of the pawn shop. Probably for cheaper than if the customer would have sold it to them. It's win-win for the pawn shop. It said 20% of customers never come back for their pawned item.

I get a kick out of how if they're only going to make $100 on something, they don't even want to waste their time. Unbelievable what kind of bankroll must be behind that business. They got a Shelby Cobra body from a guy and restored it for like $80k. Just a little side project. Somebody's made a lot of money there over the years. I just can't believe they find so many buyers.

Yes I know how the loans work and it's no surprise that a pawn shop in Vegas is the one on TV. Although I like watching the show, it's nothing I go out of my way for. Since you mentioned the way it works, yes I remember that part of the show. I wonder if there are more idiots who use pawn shops in a city like Las Vegas or not. I once heard that in gambling cities you don't really have a high rate of locals who gamble. My guess is you don't have that many that use pawn shops either. It will be interesting to see the coin collector who brings in the 32 quarter though.

I have mostly seen the losers who frequent those places and pay over and over again only to lose the item they got a loan on in the first place. Pawn shops are like, the last of the last places ppl go to sell or pawn there stuff. This show certainly lifts the sleaze factor that used to go hand in hand with the pawn shops of yesterday that's for sure.

my 2 brother-in-laws were shade tree mechanics, and they would drive around the country side looking for cars sitting in farmers yards, or buildings. many times they would pay $50 for a car that didn't run, tune it up for another fifty and sell it for five or six hundred. As far as Pawn stars I love it when an expert tells someone that some off the wall thing might be worth $5000.00 and they expect to get that.
Like Rick tells them, do you know anybody that collects these that would buy it. he has to make his money to. I love the show.

Pawn shops have there place just like any other business. My local pawn shop will give you 85% of the greysheet value for things you pawn like morgan dollars or mint sets etc. You pick them up in 60 days and you get them back, but you pay 20% interest.
If there is an emergency and you have no where else to turn, I would rather pawn my coin knowing I can get it back for a premium than using it to buy bread or milk and have no chance of getting it back.

Oh yeah!! I watched the tail end of American Pickers tonight. Those guys are real jerks and obviously they talk too much. Unfortunately they make the sellers look like real suckers. There's really no need for victimizing the sellers at all. JMHO

No, I'm not crazy. I myself have only sold one thing at a pawn shop (an old ring), and would rather sell stuff on the net. But, for the "idiots with an IQ below 50", you think they know how to use ebay? If they did, they certainly wouldn't be selling high priced items to a pawn shop. Pawn shops are a quick way for the average joe to get a few dollars instantly. No waiting for the transfer from paypal to your bank account. You walk in, sell your item and you walk out with money.
