I was just looking for a generic Morgan for a friend and I am amazed at the depth of fraud is on ebay at this point. It is not a safe place for the public to by Morgans or coins in general. It is crazying. Top of the line listing for Morgans has 2 dozen fake morngas starting at 5.51 cents! https://www.ebay.com/itm/2036527758...rentrq:9419303817c0a6e69861818fffedb26e|iid:1 https://www.ebay.com/itm/393634815521?hash=item5ba6769e21:g:-0MAAOSw8wVhae9H https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fr...LH_TitleDesc=0&_osacat=0&_odkw=morgan+dollars
Yep. Ebay does their best to police the site, but the sheer volume of shady stuff that gets listed must be difficult to cope with. You can report bad stuff, obviously.
Fake coins abound and sellers routinely lie about their locations. Five of my last six purchases were listed as shipping from Spain, the UK, or Norway. All actually shipped from Bulgaria. Very off putting.
that is not true. There are not only lots of problems there as well, but less regulation. Why are you still trolling me?
I am assuming that the second quote is a response to the first so I am replying in that vein. There has never to my knowledge been anything to suggest that Great Collections is anything but a forthright and reputable auction house. They only deal in certified TPG coins, never raw. I have won many auctions from them and a friend of mine recently sold about $20K worth of coins through them and was absolutely delighted with their professionalism, clarity and customer service. Comparing Great Collections to EBay is a huge disservice to GC and an unsupported canard.
It's on the buyer...BUYER BEWARE. It's "safe" for those who make the effort and time to do their homework on both the coin(s) and/or the seller. But agree it's not advisable for those buyers who are either too spontaneous, rushed or without patience, etc. enough to become familiar with the coins and the seller. Also, unless mistaken, I took the reply about GC to be a positive (not negative) comment...that "...GC is an alternative..." to eBay, which indeed it is for many.
Your absolutely just as likely to be ripped of on Great Collections as Ebay. The only canard is that it is being pushed as being an alternatgive to Ebay, which it isn't, and the 10% discount for wire payment and unregulated payment services. It doesn't have nearly the selction and it isn't nearly as regulated. It is an alternative selling site made by disgrunted coin dealers who dislike ebay policies and want to take some control back. Fair enough. Panacea it isn't though and you are less protected on Great Collections than on ebay. I'm glad the same cast of characters come out for this - same ole trolls. Maybe now we can stay on the topic.
Here is a thread from a few months ago about Great Collections. There are numerous positive posts from many knowledgeable, experienced, and credible CT members. The only negative comment? You guessed it; cplradar. Yet he offered no specifics, just says they're "rife with fraud" https://www.cointalk.com/threads/greatcollections-com.381277/ @cplradar Do you have any data of even anecdotal evidence to support your claim, or is this just another of your "my opinion is the absolute truth and if you don't 100% agree with me, you're a troll" unsubstantiated ramblings Oh why bother even asking. We all know where this is going. He will either post numerous law citations or discount all other comments and call the posters trolls
Isn't it amazing how the pot keeps calling the kettle black? The one labeling everyone who disagrees with him a troll when every one of his threads has something to do with his agenda and his disgust of the police, wanting the .gov to take care of him and everyone else, how coin dealers are all shysters because in his mind they all deal in stolen coins, etc. So who's the troll?
He just makes up stuff to create drama. His hate for everything and everybody in this hobby is getting really old but he has the right to give his opinion. I hate being called a troll but most here understand the truth.
eBay is better than some places, worse than others - GC and Heritage are better for higher end stuff, but the easy key to eBay is, as in all things, caveat emptor. I buy mostly slabbed coins by the big four TPGs which provides some measure of security and mostly buy from big established sellers. I'm also not buying high end stuff. Also eBay will get you your money back if you do find you've bought a fake, so that's pretty good.
The thing that he fails to realize is that we all agree that crime is a problem. Unfortunately, he keeps pushing the narrative "my way is the only way that will work and I'm not listening to anything else". From what I've gathered in reading his posts, he believes that most dealers are crooked and make their living working with thieves to profit from stolen goods. The only way to stop this, is for govt intervention with numerous regulations (he never mentions that many jurisdictions already have reporting requirements and hold times). All of the discounting of other ideas (having a firearm will only get you killed), bullying (if you disagree with my tactics you're a troll and support criminals), and rambling nonsense does nothing more than alienate those who would normally be his ally. It's very sad, but all he is managing to do is drive a wedge between himself and other concerned collectors. I keep speaking up because I want to make sure this topic doesn't become trivialized by a stubborn, closed minded person who can't see the forest through the trees. My request to the rest of the CT forum is to not let this member derail an important topic. Security and safety start well before the "crooked dealer" buys your stolen coins.
I've been both a buyer and a seller with Great Collections and recommend them highly. The ignorant statement about their credibility is just .... ignorant!
No because anyone can say anything on there. I always enjoy hearing about the latest FB screwup which is why I never go there.
