Worth sending in for grading?

I got the 2021 Reverse Proof American Silver Eagle: Designer Edition and I am wondering if you guys think it’s worth sending in for grading and trying to get the coveted PF70 grade?

From what I’ve seen on EBay they tend to sell for a lot more in PF70 than they do raw but I’m not sure how hard it is to actually get the big 70?

Like if someone hypothetically sent in 100 of these sets into PCGS or NGC approximately how many do you think would get the 70 grade?

Are the odds somewhat decent like 40% or is it super low like 2%?

    What do you guys think?

with better proof sets, pf/pr68-69 make up 97-8% that' 2-3% left includes all the rest including the 70s... but then on some coins 70s are very common (86 baby eagle commerative half comes to mind) as for these... too new to know yet

The coins are inside. I just didn't post any pictures because everyone knows what they look like xD

Ah ok so it sounds like it's not worth it. Thanks!

I guess I will wait for my 2021 Morgan Dollars & Peace Dollars.

The thing is I plan on signing up for PCGS or NGC and they both offer vouchers when you sign up for like 5 free submissions so I am trying to decide which coins of mine to use those vouchers on and submit.

On that you can get a free membership to NGC (with all submission privledges but but not the vouchers) by joining the ANA, which carries a lot of other benefits as well for a coin collector. :D ANA membership... $30-35 dollars :D Less for a YN

For no other reason the protection the TPG slab offers.

Well, the odds are on your side so far. Obviously examine yours so you know they at least have a chance at 70s. No obvious marks or spots.

Right now, NGC census is showing Type 1s at only 41 in PF 69 and 952 have made PF70. 95.9% got 70s.

Type 2s are at 25 PF69s and 919 in PF 70. 97.3% got 70s. The odds are good. I want to send mine in but haven't got around to it. Was hoping to send them with Morgans and save on shipping and handling fees.

Edit: Just wanted to add, I believe the reverse proof finish is more durable compared to mirror fields of regular proofs. I think they lend themselves to getting 70s a lot easier. Imperfections can be hidden easier in design elements compared to a smooth mirror. These having the design elements as the mirror finish hides stuff while the wide open, flat fields are already a rough texture. Just a casual observation.

Thanks! Yeah I actually did a thorough examination with my 5x loupe of both coins to check for any tiny blemishes or imperfections and couldn't find any.

That is actually why I didn't send my V75 Silver Eagle in because even though I never took it out of the capsule I did find a tiny blemish above the privy mark and knew that it was enough to knock it down from 70 to 69.

Well the coins do come in plastic capsules right from the Mint so they are protected already.

The mint capsules are easily opened. Not so with TPG slab. Do you want to find your treasure gone and spent or safe in some nearly impenetrable container?

What do you mean gone and spent?

I keep it in my safe.

A family member or friend spends or sells it while it's out of your safe.

That makes sense. Even tiny blemishes really stick out on a mirrored surface but are hard to see on a reverse proof.

How bout your child or young relative opening the mint capsule and playing with it. Gotta love those finger prints. Now your treasure is MS Bullion. Have APMEX number on speed dial to ease the pain.

If you can't tell the difference between a PF69 and a PF70, then I don't recommend that you pay for the submission. On the other hand, if the submission is free with a membership, it is a different story.

Though the stats above strongly suggest the odds are in your favor, it’s still something of a crap shoot. I’m leaving mine in the original packaging. If yours truly or an heir has to sell them, that might not be a bad deal since a lot of people are getting them slabbed.

I actually thought about that. But then I was like: "Well the people getting them slabbed will probably save the box & COA and if they're ever worth more in OGP those people who had them slabbed will probably break the coins out of the slabs and put them back in the OGP".

But based on what everyone has said maybe it would be a better idea to wait and have my 2021 Morgan Dollars & Peace Dollars graded instead.

I bought 3 of each and I am hoping I can get at least 1x MS70 for each of them and keep those for myself and then sell the extras so I can make back enough money that my own personal set ends up being paid for and I end up with a full MS70 set basically for free.

It's a lot harder to get an MS70 than it is to get a PF70. Don't forget that proof coins are handled with "kid gloves". Uncirculated coins are not!
