I can forgive the aggregators here but am surprised an auction house would knowingly tarnish their own reputation for a quick profit. That’s some pretty short sighted thinking. I had to revive this thread as I just flipped though this auction again and didn’t spot a single withdrawn lot. Occasionally a CT member will spot a fake at auction.. usually someone (or several someones) will contact the auction house and shortly after the lot is withdrawn. Obviously that didn’t happen here, leaving me with more questions..
Any respectable dealer should find a way to locate threads in important discussion groups mentioning his business or referring to something wrong in his offers/auctions.
Agreed, but to be fair I don’t think the business was actually named in this thread.. A search engine wouldn’t work but of course if I were a dealer I’d be following the major coin forums on a daily basis
I have come to the conclusion that collectors of Greek coins reading/posting in CT and other forums are just a small part of the community...
Correct - a very small community. The big money for dealers usually cannot be found in any forum. Nevertheless they should be watched - even "outsourced". For me numismatics is business and fun since more than 40 years now - a dying species?
I truly hope you are right as a strong, global collecting community bodes well for the hobby over the long term. It just makes it that much harder for me to believe this auction house wasn’t contacted about these coins by other dealers, experts, and knowledgeable collectors. And if they were, how did those conversations go and why wasn’t a single coin withdrawn?
