1906 Langnau (Bern) Richter # 257a 23mm silver 1447 struck Engraved by Holy Freres 40 VF/120 UNC in silver 80 VF/200 UNC in brass NGC says AU-58.
1903 Biel (Bern) Richter # 251a 45mm silver 693 struck Engraved by Holy Freres 60 VF/180 UNC in silver (251a) 100 VF/250 UNC in brass (251b) Uncleaned and I find the toning on the bottom of the city view to be quite attractive. NGC graded this as MS-64.
1910 Bern Richter # 263a 28mm gold (13.8g) 400 struck Engraved by Holy Freres 250 VF/400 UNC (based on 2005 gold prices) The very first Swiss shooting medal I bought years ago was this in silver, and I still have it. To be able to find one in gold, especially in this condition, was a real treat. NGC called this MS-62. I believe it's actually MS-63, but I am biased. Thanks to Rod Moores dad for these three wonderful medals.
1911 Lenzburg (Aargau) Richter # 33a 28mm silver 534 struck Engraved by Holy Freres 40 VF/120 UNC This came in it's original case and the details in the womans hair are quite amazing. NGC says MS-65. My photos do NOT do it justice.
1908 Faido (Ticino) Richter # 1441a 45mm silver 125 estimated struck Engraved by Holy Freres 200 VF/400 UNC Richter gives this a scarity rating of RR yet I have been told it's probably more like a RRR. (RR = Very Rare, RRR = Less than 10 examples known to exist) My lazy postman never left a delivery notice when he tried to deliver this so it sat at the Post Office for a month while I worried. And worried. And worried. All well that ends well though, right? Very difficult to photograph the portrait side of this medal. NONE of my pics were in focus. That's odd. NGC graded this as MS-64.
1905 Olten (Solothurn) Richter # 1127a 45mm silver 505 estimated struck Engraved by Holy Freres 60 VF/180 UNC This may well be my favorite Holy Freres design, certainly top 5 out of 50+ at the very least. NGC says MS-65. Purchased from Rod Moore Sr, and I can never thank him enough.
I have more, but I'll let other's post because I fear I have hijacked this thread. I don't want to get banned from Coin Talk...:hammer:
I think you did hijack it hiho lol After seeing Zohar's and looking at some of those I have loved them from the start. I was thinking the prices were going to be too high and you just can't collect everything. But the ones you posted looked very reasonable for those coins. Georgous coins.
Thanks Duke! Since it's been two hours here's a few more... A recent addition that I am very proud to own... 1911 Olten (Solothurn) Richter # 1131 23mm gold ??? struck (restrike of R1130a, only 60 of those were produced) Engraved by Holy Freres My photos do not do it justice. The fields are flawless and mirror like, easily MS65, maybe better. NGC called it MS-63. Oh well...
1920 Zofingen (Aargau) Richter # 37 28mm Silver Huguenin 150 minted UNC About as nice as you could ever hope to find. Still at NGC.
Last one... 1909 Winterthur (Zurich) Richter # 1801 23mm Silver Hans Frei 78 minted (RR) EF One of the most beautiful Schutzenfest medal obverses I have ever seen coupled with an uninspired reverse design. Also still at NGC.
Oh god!! Stop it!! You guys are killing me.. Those are so nice!! ALL OF THEM.. WOW!!! You are gonna trigger my OCD again .. Now I NEED one or Ten.. Or FIFTY! Thank you for opening up a whole new world of coins!!!
Zohar .... WOW HIHO .... WOW Both of you have first class collections:hail: The art work on those medals is phenominal ....... Thanks to both of you for sharing your pictures of these beautiful medals hya: I'm sure you both will inspire many more collectors of this series and that is commendable!!
My pleasure! Between the two of us we have a pretty nice Schutzenfest collection. You have concentrated on the pre-1900 classic medals, while I gravitate more towards the post 1900 issues. Here is a slightly better photo of the 1911 Gold Olten after it came back from NGC... I need to convince Rod Moore to register at Coin Talk so he can post photos. I have a few dozen shooting medals. He has a few hundred...
First class collections for sure!! What a show!! That was great, it was like watching a video of beauty and art. What a bear!! And the ladies!! And the baby, those medals are amazing!! I can not think of a better medium to place art on than one of these coin size medals! Way to go!!
I WAS originally going to comment on Zohar's medals, but after going through the entire thread......I can only agree with this: You have both opened my eyes to just more than U.S. coins. I have always known/noticed some of the MAJOR artwork on some medals, but really...you two have TOP NOTCH stuff, and it may have just triggered me to start lookin' for some of these medals. EVERY ONE of the posted medals are really gorgeous!!!!! Thank you for sharing these works of art!!
Medal vs coin grading Beautiful medals! I can't make sense of the grading tho. Can someone who's seen a lot of these comment on NGC's apparent criteria for grading medals (which were never intended to circulate) and large coins like Morgan dollars? Thanks!
