What kind of safes are most practical for the home collector with a modest collection?

As must collectors have modest collections of values less than - say - 10K, what kind of safe would be appropriate for home and apartment dwellers, especially in urban environments?

@SensibleSal66 is from old Connecticut money. That's his small safe. Wait till you see his walk in vault :angelic:

Modest collections tend to necessitate smaller safes. There are smaller safes that are secure. My third safe came from Walmart. It is a small safe in my closet. Thing is, like @Treashunt said, they can be picked up and carried away to open at the crooks leisure. Bolt the safe down to the floor! That is the most overlooked aspect of securing a safe.

"safe", can be a relative term. Nothing safe here.

I'm not organized enough to have something "real".
Anybody with OCD want a crack at that?
And this target bag is where i keep 206 W mint mark quarters.

I leave my doors unlocked. I'd rather have the thief try the knob, and use the door, instead of kicking it open and destroying things. All you need to do, is get past me.

Any safe is better than nothing but keep this in mind.
You can bolt a safe down but if the bad guys know it's there they can bring pry bars and rip it off the floor in nothing flat. Don't let anyone know you have a safe. I store anything of much value in local bank vaults.

I suppose there are those who do not know this but Sentry safes are about the worst possible choice one could make for storing coins. They are downright infamous for the very high levels of humidity they produce inside the safe. This is caused by the fireproofing techniques and materials they use. And if you search deep enough you will find where Sentry themselves confirms this is true.

And as collectors should know humidity is one of the worst enemies there is for coins ! And no, using silica gel packs inside the Sentry safes won't help. Even with silica gel packs inside the safe, over time, the humidity inside the safe will get high enough to make paper damp to the touch. And that's just about the last thing you want for your coin storage location !

Over the years there have been many threads on CT discussing safes for coins. I would strongly urge any who want info on safes to search out those threads and read them.
