So I have spotted this coin on auction. I'm no expert but I believe this is a 1917 in this slab. The rivets on the shield and the left side obverse show the wall lines still. I think the drapery is wrong for the 1916 too. Although it is pretty worn. I have seen this debated before. So let's go with the opinions!
The thing that really boggles my mind is that this is in a pcgs slab. I know there's a thread here somewhere and a guy sent a coin to icg and they called it a 1916. It looked like a 1917. Everyone told him to send it to pcgs to have them determine what it was. But here this is.
I don't know how counterfeit slabs work, but I can see someone buying an FR02 1916, cracking it out, then using the label info to create a counterfeit slab with a FR02 1917 coin inside...reselling both for 1916 money.
Look at this, I think the slab is counterfeit. Look at the hologram on the reverse, compared to the pcgs museum of coin holders. This one was really bugging me...
I think the holder is legit. The holder is a short run of "Dupont" label/holograms they ran in 2014/2015. I think it's just a misattribution. Wouldn't be the first time.
Assuming the slab is authentic...I would imagine PCGS will call this a mechanical error and not compensate the owner the lost value.
I agree, but for a different reason. That's the first PCGS blue slab I've seen where the lettering wasn't centered. The "PCGS FR02" and the "Standing Liberty" are off to the right, the "Standing Liberty" VERY much so.
The barcode matches the coin#, grade, and cert#, and it verifies. Seems like a lot of work to put an ostensibly real coin into a faked but accurate slab. Simplest answer is that PCGS messed up.
I think the thought is it’s a fake slab with a 1917 in it. Put a cheap coin in a fake slab and sell it for $1500.
Yes I messaged the seller about this. I sent him the info. He has taken the auction down himself. So idk maybe he even knew they messed up. But a mistake like this is a big mistake. This isn't finding a 1916 hidden in a 1917 slab.
The seller has relisted this coin for sale. I believe it is improperly attributed and is actually a 1917. I had messaged him before and he took the coin down. I see it is back up. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1916-Stand...2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0
Interesting, I just read the above on fake slab issue, I didn't see it when I looked at it, which is kind of scary. Good reminder to check the registration number, thanks!
