I stopped at my local coin dealer, tues. and bought some supplies I brought up the topic about nickles and dimes , that I have not seen one or any on COIN TALK , he replied they are all going to PUERTO RICO. He then said wait a second, he came back with a album of plastic pages, which had a roll of nickels and a roll of dimes inside of it. I asked him how much were they going for ? HE REPLIED $4.50 NICKEL $5.25 FOR A DIME. They were nice coins, but I could not see paying that price.
It appears that your local coin dealer is completely out of his mind! For that price, there will be holes remaining in my albums for a long time.
I agree with you also , if I dont get any of these in pocket change with in the next few years, I will never be able to get one.
I REFUSE to pay those prices for 2009 nickels and dimes. After all... 86.64 Million nickels and 146 Million dimes were made in 2009. I'll either get them at face value or not at all. I can't help but laugh at people paying those high prices on e-bay for rolls of 2009 nickels and dimes.
I will stick to my Mercury dimes if i gotta pay that price. They will eventually turn up for face value or a small fee.
Doesn't matter how many nickels they minted. What matters is, can you get some at the bank? The answer is no. It has been almost a year since first minted. We are way out of normal new coinage distibution cycles. This economy is the worst in 75 years. This changes what you believe to be the "norm" in distribution. The prices on rolls have actually started back up. The ones buying rolls may prove to be the smartest ones, and have the last laugh at that those that didn't buy.
I had all those rolls of the 09p dimes, and sold them all. I don't have any left. I have coins left, but no rolls. For the price I received, I don't think I made a mistake.....I hope I'm right.
You have to use common sense at a dealer, just because he showed me, did not give the influence that I had to have a couple. As i said earlier I will ornot pay that price or for anyone else. I will just wait until i find one in pocket change even if takes years from now. I will continue to use him for a coin dealer, he has always made things right on previous deals. I dont think just because he is asking that price makes him a bad dealer if so 75% of the selers on E-- OR ANY OTHER ARE BAD DEALERS ALSO. It just some people have to have something now, If they have the money go for it personally i cant do that This is just my opion really no right or wrong But I do think he is a great coin dealer :desk:
I got my 1950D nickel out of circulation, and these have got well over ten times the mintage. They'll turn up. It may take years, if they get hoarded upon their eventual release as the 1950D did, but they'll turn up.
It has been said here many times that most people collect coins for the pleasure of if, and if a profit can be made then that is a bonus. I personally agree with this ideology. It would be nice for me to have a few rolls of 2009 nickels and dimes, but I just don't think that paying those high premiums would give me much satisfaction. I also think that if I were fortunate enough to run across some rolls that I would sell them as fast as possible right now and make the money. I just don't have much passion for collecting these 2009 nickels and dimes. If I were to hold onto some it would only be for hope of a profit in the future.
Every coin store I've ever been to sells the current year's and the prior years coins, especially proofs, for way more than they're actually worth. Just becuase they're in demand and have relatively low mintages, if you considered 180 million low.
