I won a Whitman folder of Buffaloes and this was in the right slot. I didn't figure it in my bid. There's a lot of die markers on it. The area of the leg is a little beat up. Naturally.
It has at least 7 of these diagnostics. Are there other 37-Ds with them? OBVERSE 1) small feather - almost a 2 3/4 feather as it is not attached at the base by the head 2) back of upper neck - is mottled or moth eaten 3) a reverse, upside down V sticking out in front of the first hair braid below the twine 4) lower neck die crack, with couple breaks .. almost looks like a couple of pearls necklace REVERSE 1) arch spreading down below sheath in field 2) Right Rear leg above hock is thinner than the left 3) E Pluribus Unum is clearly separated from back of buffalo 4) mintmark D size, shape and location 5) left side of beard is shorter

SensibleSal66, posted: "My opinion was just that." I know. My point was that everyone has one and they are entitled to post it.
It looks like it to me but I'm not %100 convinced until its certified think of it as a raw 1916 D merc could be a win or a bust.
I'm not seeing a key figure the stream that appears underneath the belly which makes me think now its just damage or counterfeit also the back leg doesn't appear to have the moth eaten effect.can't see the coin in person so its hard to tell.
Here's a shot of the leg and the area where the stream should be. This area was cleaned a little more harshly so it doesn't show up. It's really the only diagnostic that doesn't show.
The word (doesn't) was just a typo/appears.That might be a problem as the stream is one of the most important pieces to the puzzle as I would say.
I agree, if the coin was a higher grade and not cleaned. It can't be seen on lower grades, so, you have to use the other diagnostics to verify. I'll take 7/8 any day.
True, which is why variety detecting on very old worn messed up coins is a pain sometimes this one is a good example, not my cup of tea but I make an effort.
I'm just going by photos . Your approach is better than my Approach . But I do have to agree, in hand, would be much better .
I would never intentionally buy this coin. Once again, I stepped in it. With coin in hand and looking at it with my scope, I am very confident it is genuine. Here is the lot it was in. Final cost - less than $45. https://www.proxibid.com/Coins-Curr...tman-Album/lotInformation/63813032&rfpb=0#Top
How is it that no one else is noticing? The final price is basically the album alone is it the fact these are just underrated sites with nearly no competitio,im surprised it was sold for so little. If so I might join up and get a 1909 S vdb for a few bucks if its that easy.
