This is a very scary thought, but it's even scarier that it is probably true. I wonder how many people paid good money on the 'bay for an 09-S VDB they still think is real, but is as fake as pro-wrestling. It truely breaks my heart.:(

I'm actually in the market for one now and REGARDLESS of where I buy mine, it's going to be in a slab from PCGS, NGC, or ANACS. I'm not messing around with a raw coin from eBay or anywhere else. ;)

Smart move, Coinman. When I'm ready to finally take the plunge, I will be doing exactly the same.

Yeah, you were pretty close. Also, out of the 16,000 certified by NGC and PCGS, how many of those were reholdered, or PCGS crossovers from NGC? I'm not sure how accurate PCGS is, but I am confident that there is less than 100,000. In their "Coin Guide", I remember that they estimated there were several tens of thousands. In reality, that is a pretty high survival rate, especially when you start comparing that to the 1-2% survival rates of some of the classic gold coins.

    I highly doubt that....

When I bought mine raw, I purchased it from a reputable, major dealer, who took the time out to discuss the finer points of the coin with me. That was the last time I made a major purchase without knowing the diagnostics for myself.

Well, according to Al Gore, in 3 years there WILL be ocean front property in Tennessee! LOL! I'm buyin'! haha

Thanks, Quartertapper. This is probably the only major purchase I'll be making for a looooong time that doesn't relate to putting something IN the driveway or IN the house (not counting IN a Dansco album ha ha) -- there's just no way I want to mess with spending $500-$1,000 on a counterfeit coin!

Personally, my little rule of thumb is if I'm buying a coin worth more than $100, it's coming in sonically sealed plastic with a hologram. ;)

Doubt it all you want. But talk to professional authenticators, professional graders and other recognized experts - and you'll find out that your doubts are misplaced.

Wow. I'm really glad I bit the bullet and got the 1999 SBA proof - only 50,000 of them were made! Now I just have to hold my breath....

This thread needs some pics :)

This one here cost me a bit more than my first car and even though the pop on these is relatively high compared to other Lincoln cents of the era, the demand for this coin is huge, especially for a nice looking example. Accordingly, this penny was worth every penny :)

Just make sure you don't get a fake coin in a fake PCGS or NGC slab!
These really scare me because the fakers are really getting good at this.

I'm positive that there way more fakes then surviving original pieces these days. This coin has been the #1 counterfeited/altered coin for decades... not the mention the Chinese counterfeits...

Thank you so much for the heads up, Poppa. That's a scary thought....

I'm not sure why anyone would want to possess a raw 1909 S-VDB. Everyday, it faces exposure to air, oils and everything else that is not good for a coin. If I owned a super-key-date like that I would hand deliver that coin to PCGS' for certification.

I've owned a couple, neither certified. Currently, only have one. Had no trouble selling the other one, but would be very careful about where I bought one.
